Luthien
[quote name='jiyoung' date='Jan 10 2006, 03:44 PM']There's a lot to be said about cutting out simple carbs. Complex carbs are good forĀ you, like whole grains and such, but simple carbs are supposed to be what makes you gain the most weight--mostly, avoiding junk/processed food will help you. For me, I'm trying to lose weight because I figure I'm not the way God made me to be. I'm unhealthy and I actually had some blood work done on my mom's insistence; I'm at risk for diabetes, apparently, and my HDL levels aren't very high either (my LDL isn't too bad, though, I guess). It really has to do with health, because there is an ideal weight where there wouldn't be all sorts of health problems and stuff. It shouldn't be about being skinny, but about being healthy. I think the main thing motivating me now is discernment--a nun's life can be pretty active, and being overweight can really slow one down. Furthermore, if I have diabetes, probably a lot of communities would become closed to me because it's a burden on them to take care of me. That's basically that's getting me to take this all seriously now. If it's about health, then you're doing it for the right reasons, and it shouldn't matter if people are going to pester you about how you look or anything. franciscanheart
I have been trying for a long time to get back to being healthy but using a variety of highly unhealthy methods. I now understand the need for a healthy weight loss plan and I would totally repeat what jiyoung said if it wasnt annoying. So I will say that I agree totally with her. Things that are natural take a lot more to break down. Your body works harder to process those foods and in turn burns more calories while adding a significantly smaller number of fats. Whole foods is an awesome place to go when you're trying to lose weight. Look around at what they have and look for the same things in your regular grocery store. I tend to stick to the outside of the store since that's where they seem the keep the majority of the healthy, less processed stuff. Avoid junk food aisles at all costs. Even whole foods has some bad stuff so be careful. Eat on smaller plates. I did this for a while and it was amazing how much weight I lost. Oprah just wrapped up an awesome show on this topic. I wish I had known she was doing it before it started so I could have told you. Oh well...
Nathan
I've lost 18 pounds in two weeks by eating a low-carb diet and walking a couple of miles a day.
franciscanheart
that sounds really unhealthy. most people dont lose that much weight in such a short amount of time without some consequence.
Nathan
You do if you're unhealthily overweight. It pours off at first.
franciscanheart
gotcha. i did say most people after all... i knew if you were obese that it "poured off" in the beginning... like on biggest loser.
photosynthesis
Yeah, that happens a lot... when a person just starts a diet often they lose a lot more than the recommended 2 lbs per week
Andrea348
i bought a pedometer ($3.88 at wal-mart) to motivate myself to walk more. Seeing that number go up makes me want to walk more. A fellow teacher also bought one, so it is a little bit competative to see who has more steps I also bought two workout DVD's. I just started, so I've only seen parts of each one. The first one is the biggest loser workout. What I like about this is there are six different workout's to choose from. It is also nice because the people on the video aren't trained, skinny, professionals, they are the people from the show who still have a little bit of weight on them and don't do the routine perfectly. It's nice to see people messing up...that way you don't feel so bad. The other one I got is Pilates for weight loss. I was surprised about how easy the beginner level starts out. I hate the ones where you are frustrated right away because it is really hard. This one really seems like it eases you in to the process. As far as eating, I am basically trying to limit the quantity and improve the quality. Depriving myself of things I love (CANDY!) would never work for me. Instead, I brought all my candy to work. That way I don't have much time when I am free to eat it. I also limit myself to just a few pieces. Right now I'm working on a small box of sweet tarts. I don't think I have ever made a tiny box last this long. I've been trying to eat fruits instead of cookies or crackers, also. It will be so much nicer when it is warm outside so I can ride my bike or go for a walk outside when I get home.
photosynthesis
pedometers are fun... I can never figure out how to get them to work though... Maybe I should use "Sweating in the Spirit" to work out. lol
