Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
19 For whereas I was free as to all, I made myself the servant of all, that I might gain the more. 20 And I became to the Jews, a Jew, that I might gain the Jews: 21 To them that are under the law, as if I were under the law, (whereas myself was not under the law,) that I might gain them that were under the law. To them that were without the law, as if I were without the law, (whereas I was not without the law of God, but was in the law of Christ,) that I might gain them that were without the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might gain the weak. I became all things to all men, that I might save all what does this mean??? Sam
Era Might
That the Church is Catholic, ie, Universal. She is sent to all nations and cultures. She cannot be confined by Roman or Greek culture, Jewish or Gentile outlooks. She is all things to all men, in the sense that our culture is not absorbed by Christianity, but, as Pope Pius XII would say, "freed from all error and crowned with Christian wisdom". SanctifyMe
maybe this is also an example of how Jesus gets down to 'our level' , a level where he can look us straight in the eye, ..see into our souls. kind of the idea that a friend who has 'been there' really understands? I will become like you in order to redeem you? ....maybe i am missing the point..but i see it this way; just a thought, a possibility~

scardella
Part of it seems to be like this: When you go out to evangelize people, you have to learn the culture and you have to be familiar with what they believe, as opposed to what your first impressions are. After you have internalized the culture, you can relate to them and spread the Gospel effectively. These are the reasons that missionaries live with the people they're evangelizing for a period of time before they really confront anyone. It also gives them time to create bonds of love there, so that you're not seen as an outside invader.
Guest JeffCR07
It is also important to understand that Paul was writing this as a method of speaking out against the Judaizers, or those who thought that Christians must observe the old dietary laws of the Jews. Paul points out that there is nothing wrong with abiding by the dietary laws, and so if it will help him in converting the Jews he will do so "as if [he] was under the law," while at the same time making the point that those laws are no longer binding upon christians. Thus, if sticking to Judaic dietary law will hurt his chances of converting gentiles, he will not abide by them when he is around the gentiles.
