Lil Red
dave, please know that i support whatever decision you decide to make. i think you should go for it, play sports because it is your passion, and what you want to do. that being said, maybe some posters' frustrations are from that it feels like you are limiting what you want us to say. we can say this, but not that. maybe it is because in the past some people have not been all that charitable about comments that they have made to you, but whatever the reason, know that the people here who truly care about you are not out to get you or belittling you. God bless, and go kick some patootie!
franciscanheart
i think you are taking things way too personally and need to reevaluate what it is you need from people and what is reasonable to expect from them. that being said i think that your goal is an admirable one. not many people are willing to do what they want to do so late in life. whatever you decide is probably the best choice for you. Tata126
Dave, I know where you're coming from. All my life I've wanted to dance, and I asked for ballet lessons, and my parents never let me. Not that I'm blaming them, because I also asked for piano lessons, which they did give me, but the fact still stands that I made it to the age of 20 without ever dancing, even though I always wanted to. I mean really dancing, not dancing at clubs. But I've recently gotten into swing dancing, and there's a club at my school that does ballet, and I have a friend whom I've asked to teach me to Irish dance. I know I'm never going to be as good as I would have if I had been able to start younger, but what's important to me is just being able to do it, not being better than anybody. So I say, join an adult sports team, and don't worry about all the people who've done it all their lives and who are better than you...only you know how much you want to do sports, and how happy it would make you, so it doesn't matter what anybody else says. It's also a great way to stay in shape. :-)
prose
At the risk of getting in trouble (becuase almost everyone that has posted here has gotten on your bad side) , here is my opinion:
At the same time, though, I don't want to feel like I missed out, and yet I can't help but fear that adult league sports would just be a poor substitute for what I didn't do in high school.
Well, I certainly don't think it is a poor substitute. Maybe you feel this way because you are scared that you will meet another Joel (which is possible), and so unconsciously you are looking for reasons not to join. I think that you sound like you truly want to get involved. Maybe tennis would be a good option. That way you can play, but not feel intimidated by team members. And if you want to remove 90% of competition, how about golf? That is truly (in my opinion) a sport that you play to better yourself and not necesarily to compete. Maybe the trick will be for you to find a non-competitive sport that you can grow in skill at. Sports come in many shapes and sizes. You can always try a few and see which ones appeal to you most. Another option: maybe consider coaching little league or some youth sport? Then you can get the sports you desire while helping others! Something to think about. Anyway, I was going to give my opinion, but it probably falls under your definition of belittling, so I would like to wish you luck with this hobby and I hope you can keep a sense of perspective. The reason why I was scared it might be a poor substitute is because I wanted something that would essentially be no different from high school sports with the only real difference being that the players are adults rather than children. I just wanted to stop feeling like I missed out -- I was sick of feeling like everyone else would get the feast while I got the leftover crumbs. And the only people who got on my bad side are Sojourner and Tink.
I think that you sound like you truly want to get involved. Maybe tennis would be a good option. I think I'd rather play soccer, but maybe I'll start playing tennis too. I've played it before and even took lessons, and I didn't come away feeling totally frustrated, so that's saying a lot. And I've played golf before; I just don't have the patience for it, and it frustrates me.
Maybe the trick will be for you to find a non-competitive sport that you can grow in skill at. philothea
Would you consider running, like in a running club, and racing (5k, 10k, etc)? Good combination of easy ramp up, supportive friendly people, endless room for improvement, and (if you choose) all the competition you could ever want. And you're at a good age point for races too. It's also really good for asthma. (I have a similar background -- the girl version.)

Sojourner
So you're implying that I'm ignoring Jesus and a job? That's just not true, and it's not your place to tell me what is best for me, as last time I checked, no one on here was God! I asked that no one here belittle my feelings ... I guess I overestimated everyone's ability at least attempt to understand. Thanks a lot. I'll make sure never to tell anybody on here anything again.
Ding ding ding ding ding! You win the prize for ... reading WAY more into my post than I ever intended! I in no way intended to imply that your quest to be competitive in sports in some way meant that you're ignoring Jesus and a job. My only intent was to clarify the boundaries within which you wish to discuss your goals. Unfortunately, your uber-sensitivity on this topic clouded your thinking.
Why thank you! I also in general smell of elderberries at sports ... I've found a couple that I really enjoy, howewver -- cycling and dodgeball. My suggestion: find something that you really have FUN doing and get into it. While I don't think pleasure should be our ultimate goal in life, with something that so naturally involves pain it's good if you can at least get something pleasurable out of it. And if you're having fun, you're more likely to succeed competitively.
