franciscanheart
How does everyone feel about community colleges? I recently read in a friend's (well from high school) journal that she was glad she wasnt a bum going to community college and waiting tables. It didn't rub me the right way. Maybe I'm biased but I don't think community colleges are a place for bums. Bums are at every school. What do you think?
Andrea348
it all depends.....there are plenty of situations where community college is a good choice.....like if you have no clue what you want to major in (you can try a bunch of things out and not waste a lot of money)...it's also good if money is tight and you want to get some gen eds done before going to the school of choice....some occupations only require a community college education...... as long as you have a good community college, it's a perfectly good option.....my community college smells of elderberries, the credits do not transfer many places i did take a community college class once over the summer to transfer the credits to my college there are bums everywhere....you are absolutely right
peach_cube
Community college can be very smart , if the credits transfer. I went to one for 2 years and took care of most of my non-major credits and figured out what the heck I wanted to major in. I ended up saving a bundle, and it made the transition to major university easier.
picchick
There are bums at every school. Only some schools "don't allow" bums. BU in Illinois....I had a "bum" friend. He didn't do his work and such and failed out. So I guess it depends where you go. CC's are sometimes considered "bum" schools because you cannot get your bachelor's degree only an associate. But it all depends on what you want. Either way, if you want to be successful you need to work hard where ever you go. Meg
zabbazooey
Community college student RIGHT HERE They're great for getting credits to transfer for cheap to any university/college. At least my CC transfers to a lot of local universities/colleges. Community college is just like any other college, except typically the grading scale is a bit more lax (aka it's easier, at least at my school it is) and you can't get a bachelor's degree. They are the way to go, IMHO because while you are trying to figure out what to do with your life, you can still take classes and not have to take out a second mortgage doing so. homeschoolmom
RussianGirl went to commuity college. It was smart. She'd never have been able to go to college otherwise. edit to add: those "bums" are very often people working to put themselves through college without benefit of financial help from parents. avemaria40
I plan on going to a 4 year university or college when i'm older but I hate it that ppl often think that community college is a place for people who slack off! It can be very helpful if you want to knock off your required college classes while still figuring out what you want to do with your life and not have to spend a fortune on it. Also, what if someone got disowned or has a poor family or their parents won't financially support their choice in life and wants an affordable option for higher education? Anastasia13
Please forgive me if I come off harsh in this paragraph. I think your friend should consider herself lucky that she can afford to go to a four year school and not have to wait on tables or something. If I was one to be easily offended, I would be offended by what that person said. Last semester I was at a community college and waiting on customers at a store which is similar to that in concept. A nearly 40 week is not being a bum. The community college that I am at works students just as hard as either the four year state school I went to and the private one that my brother used to go to. I met so many C or just over C average students at the school I used to go to. Even when they did better, they had so many units that their avarage would not soon change much. They also have majors that are more skill oriented for jobs that don't require as much advanced theoretical knowledge as upper division requires. I wish I had done more to learn to drive better early and gone to a community college first. Edited January 3, 2006 by Light and Truth
alicemary
With the outrageous price of college education today, believe me a community college is an awesome deal. I have found it does not matter so much the school as the effort one puts into the education. It is what you make it, Also, whether you go to the most elite school, or the humblest dump in town, a few years down the road, no one cares where you went to school. Now if you are a big business man, sure a Harvard degree will help you get established, but after a few years, it is you not your degree a company wants. Norseman82
As long as credits transfer to the university of your choice, go for it. In general, if you are looking at the practical applications of a course over a theoretical foundation, I've found that you can learn more at community colleges than at a university where you have 500 students jammed into a big lecture hall for a "weeding out" class. Of course, if you're into the theoretical side of a subject, university might be better. I'll tell you something about my experience. I took a few courses at a local community college after graduating from a 4-year university and those courses helped me get my present position. My former Opus Dei circle leader, who went to the same 4-year university as me (that's how we became acquainted), also took some courses at a community college after graduation and also said that the quality of instruction was better than at the university. Another thing about teachers at community colleges: many also have real-world (i.e., job) experience in the subjects that they teach.

Era Might
I was a bum once at a community college. Come to think of it, I still am, minus the college. : Seriously, though, community college is what it is. It's not Harvard, but it's a start. A lot of people there needed basic English skills, to say nothing of college level work. But that's where they are. They have to start somewhere. I admire a lot of people in community college, because they are doing what they have to do to make life better for themselves, and a lot of times, for their young families. Although the academics aren't as rigorous as they would be at a regular university, there are some excellent teachers on the community college level. I had an old Jewish guy teach a psychology course, and I considered it a privelege to know him. He was just an excellent professor. A little eccentric too. franciscanheart
But see I hate that. I hate that the view of community college is that it is people who have messed up and are making things better. It's for people who need lesser work or to learn english or something. It's not that at all! Some of us are paying for college on our own and can't afford university. Some of us don't know what the heck we want to do so instead of going to a university we go to community college. Some people go because they aren't ready to leave home. *sigh* i hate the negative connotations.
