Cardinal Keeler

Extra ecclesiam nulla salus

this is from Catholic Aplogetics International:
Unfortunately, the previous few Popes have been far too lenient on dissidents on the theological "left" (e.g. Mahoney, Kasper, Daneels, Dowling, Kung, Lehmann, Keeler, et al), who deserve to be punished far more than Archbishop Lefebvre ever did. If you want to fault John Paul II for rewarding a man who cooperated in the guilt of abortion (Lehmann) with a red hat, you'll get no arguments from me. end.
-B. Douglass

what has keeler done wrong?

no idea . . . he's Archbishop in Baltimore . . . pretty strong on pro-life issues . . . maybe he's been too "open" regarding the liturgy?

I certainly didn't think he was in the same category as Mahoney or Kung

Extra ecclesiam nulla salus

he is a bit open about the liturgy

but we do have a TLM here once a week.

no NOvus ordo latin masses at the moment.

he is very strong about pro-life, but i would say that we have a lot of heterdox priests in the archdiocese that i know of.

I thought ST. ALPHONSUS SHRINE (Baltimore, MD) had indult masses. Just curious.

I just emailed Ben Douglass the man who wrote the comment about why he thinks Keeler is a leftist.

God Bless,

Sam

how is that possible? I realize that the Bishop can rightly deny the indult Mass, but how can he say that the novus ordo can't be in a certain language? Or better yet, why would he say that? I mean geezum, the English or Spanish novus ordo is just a crappy translation of the official Latin text, how could the official Latin text of the Mass be forbidden? Especially considering the importance of Latin in the Church and the normative and official status of the Latin text?

Crazy.

ok here is what Douglass said:
Sam,

Certainly, he has some redeeming qualities. When I put him on that list I was thinking specifically of his letting the Bishops Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, of which he was the head, publish a document which teaches that Jews have their own covenant which saves them apart from Christ, and that it is unacceptable to attempt to convert Jews to Christianity. You can read it at the link below.

"Reflections on Covenant and Mission" (http://www.jcrelations.net/en/?id=966)
JMJ,
Ben Douglass
While the "Reflections on Covenant and Mission" was...well, being extremely kind, I'll say ambigious and easily misread (I think it's possible, if a bit difficult, to read it in an orthodox manner, but I could be mistaken, it's been a while since I read it.)..., I'm not sure how much control Cardinal Keeler had over it's writing and publication.

As a general rule, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the CAI's opinions or statements. Again, being extremely kind... they have been having some trouble 'thinking with the Church' on a lot of issues, and even more trouble being charitable to those with whom they may disagree.
