Extra ecclesiam nulla salus
In order to begin: No are monks in the opus dei.
yeah i noticed that in the trailer "Silas" the opus dei "monk" is wearing a habit that looks franciscan. And i was like i don't think so. Myles Domini
Yeah its an amazingly colourful characterisation isnt it? To have a personal prelature with monks... you'd think if you were going to state that the details you write in your book are rooted in fact you'd get a rudimentary detail like that correct. You only need to go to Opus Dei's homepage to learn the difference between a personal prelature and a religious order. Nobody is saying you need to go buy a copy of the Code of Canon law. Edited January 2, 2006 by Myles
DingoBot
The DaVinci Code is an anti-catholic work of fiction. musturde
Then why see the movie? It'll either be exactly the same as the book, or it'll have lesser content (which in most novel-film adaptions, this is the case).
You know as well as I do that movies aren't the same as the books. They may have added things in it and took much of it out. musturde
I agree that a lot of people who do watch the film will see it just for it's entertainment value; however, believe it or not, there are also many who actually do believe these conspiracy theories. The novel itself is fiction, but it presents it's claims as "facts" (like the Left Behind series, it's fiction, but claims it's basis is based on biblical facts). I've personally never experienced anyone coming up to me, and using the Da Vinci Code as an example of how Catholicism is evil, or our portrayal of Jesus is inaccurate; but friends and those who I associate with, have. I've seen television programs on channels such as Discovery, TLC, History Channel, etc, which investigate these conspiracy theories (such as if Jesus had relations with Mary Magdeline, or if He was really divine), it's shocking how they come to these conclusions. If there is any way to discrimate the Catholic Church, and Christianity in general, they will do it. Paladin D
It still doesn't change the fact that you will be supporting him financially, when you purchase a ticket to see this film.
musturde
The movie's going to be soo popular that boycotting it won't really do much. Do you think it will actually have an impact? Dan Brown will still continue to make books and this movie will still be in theatres. A lot more people will watch it if we put controversy on it. Trust me, if there's a big enough boycott, people will see it who didn't even care to because they'll be wondering what the fuss is all about. (Remember The Passion of Christ?) Also this will just show closedmindedness on our part. Why not just have the priests explain the Church's stance on the Code or just recommend the Hoax. That way if the priests reccomend reading the hoax, people will have a better idea of how to counter it. It's more constructive too, in my opinion. The film will be popular, but that still does not make it "right" to support this movie. The Vatican itself condemned the Da Vinci Code. Why should we, as devout Catholics, support such garbage? I clearly understand what you're saying, but I still cannot see how that justifies Catholics to support it. Boycotts do work, but we need each person to add to the number to make an effective stand. Just look at what the Catholic League and the American Family Association did, because of their boycotts and media pressure, many retailers are now using "Merry Christmas" and/or will be using it next year.
