Good Homilies

I'm posting this here because part of it has been debated in the past, and just in case something comes up debating it, I'd rather have it here than in Open Mic. Also, I am hoping Likos reads it, and I think he's more likely to see it here than on Open Mic. That being said...

I love it when the priests give amesome homilies. Lately I've heard so many, reminders of how skipping Mass is a mortal sin, how to behave during Mass, etc. This past Sunday I actually attended the parish I fondly call my "backup parish" (because if I am going to be late for Mass at my parish, or if I've been kept up late at night by Adrienne I can go to the 6pm Mass there) and almost always the pastor gives great homilies. This past Sunday he outlined some changes in the parish, some from himself and some from the Bishop.

#1) The pastor has decided no to hold confessions on the weekends after the 4pm Sat. Mass. They used to hold confessions before all the Masses. But he feels that this encourages people to go out partying and sinning over the weekend and then just confess right before Mass, and then repeat the behavior week after week. Now people may actually have to try and behave for a week or more at a time. ;)

#2) No more blessings in lieu of Communion if you can't receive. He said that after Mass if you want to approach him for a blessing then that was fine. This came from the Bishop. I'm not sure if that follows for little children, like if a Mother brings her baby up with her, but I know it definately goes for adults and those who have received the Sacraments of Confession and Communion already.

Anyhow, I just thought that was kind of interesting, and a good reminder to us to strive to be holy and avoid sin, that we may receive Our Lord's Body and Blood in the Eucharist. I certainly don't mind being reminded and encouraged. :)

lol, when I was in the undergrad seminary once, I came rolling in at 3 am and I was, well, in a state of mortal sin . . . so I banged on the door of my rector and asked him to hear my confession . . . he said "Now????!!! It's three in the morning!!!!" and I said "What if I die in my sleep?" Well, he heard my confession!

The next day a little note was placed on the bottom of the stairs:

"Those seminarians whose souls are in mortal peril and in need of confession are free to come at any time. However, between the hours of 12 midnight and 5 am you would be well advised to also call an ambulance, you'll need it by the time we're done."

I laughed and laughed and laughed.

Well, anyway, I became a much better seminarian after that night!

HAHAHA! That's a wicked story.

I don't know about that confession thing.... but then again, I supposed if you REALLY had to go before mass you could ask the priest, that would force you to go face to face for a little spiritual direction.

I think it's amesome that people there even care enough to go to confession or just go up for a blessing if they're in a state of sin. Either everyone at my parish is perfect all the time, or they have no idea what they frequently do.

Blazer, I'm surprised you could confess to your rector. My rector has said it is against Canon Law for him to hear seminarians confessions because if were to confess to him that I fornicated and killed a person, he could not take that into account when recommending me for ordination to my bishop.

Also, one thing I love about Hispanics is their love for th Eucharist and the respect they give to it. Sometimes, I go to the Spanish Mass at my home parish and many times about half the congregation won't go to Communion. I asked why that is and they said they hadn't been to Confession yet.

There's something that concerns me a bit about that. If you realized that you committed mortal sin, and you were contrite and had every intention of confessing as soon as possible, but you went to bed because you didn't want to wake the priest and would arrange a time to confess with him the next morning -- to me it would seem scrupulous to think that you would be damned to hell if you died in your sleep because you didn't wake the priest. I can understand waking them during the night if someone is seriously ill of course and needed last rites. But until a priest was available I would trust that God would care for my soul -- I just wouldn't take communion if I was attending mass before then.

As far as I know your rector is right, it is. We are not even allowed to confess to our vice rector. Ifyou think about it though, it is probably a good thing. They are the ones that ultimately evaluate you, and it is possible they might be swayed by what they heard in confession, even though they couldn't say anything.

Just my .02, of course.
