desertwoman
Well, they always said that Kentucky was the very last to succeed from the union... after the war ended. It seems very southern, I went to visit Louisville (and I went to the Makers Mark Brewery) and it was cool, but they were still part of the union. So they are southern at heart, but not southern. Virginia on down to Floridia and to Texas.

I don't think he's on at the moment, so not likely. My friend maintains his southern-ness -- says he's "southern and slicker than snot on a doorknob." Maybe I should have voted that Kentucky is it's own special place ... Nathan
Kentucky certainly sounds like it should be Southern, but technically it's not. I was actually surprised that it wasn't further down South o the map when I looked at it.

philothea
I know one person who lives in KY, and one who used to, and from what they describe it seems southern to me. I've never been there though. I haven't visited much South.
Cam42
Kentucky (Russellville government) succeeded from the Union; November 20, 1862. They were admitted to the CSA on December 10, 1862. Although for a time, there were two governments controlling Commonwealth. Therefore there is no official record of it being readmitted to the Union. The Confederates made advances in the state during the "Kentucky Campaign" of Generals Braxton Bragg and Edmund Kirby Smith in 1862, but Braggs' retreat following the Battle of Perryville left the state under the control of the Union Army for the rest of the war. But, yes, it is considered to be a Southern State. It is part of the old "Solid South." Which would be old time Southern Democrats. And to think, I am not from there, and never have been. Tennessee. That's for me. I've lived lots of places, but never in Kentucky.

tojo
To my Michigander Yankee way of thinking, it sure is! You go along the Mason Dixon line between MD and PA, and keep extending it so that on it's southern side is WV, and the southern portions of OH, IN, IL, and MO. From MO, you go straight south along the western border of MO, AR, and LA, and there you have the greater South East. So yes, to my way of thinking, cities in OH like Cincinatti and Dayton, cities in IN like Bloomington and Evansville, and IL south of Springfield and Decatur are all southern. I mean, have you heard those people speak?
