DAF
Does anybody have any Bible Commentaries they would reccommend? I just want good sources that won't be telling me that Jesus was actually a woman and that they were actually serving jell-o at the last supper. The choices I have are: -Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible -Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible -John Darby's Synopsis of the Bible -Geneva Bible Translation Notes -John Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible -Jamieson, Fausset and Brown Commentary -Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible -Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary -Scofield's Reference Notes -The People's New Testament (B. W. Johnson) -The Treasury of David (C. H. Spurgeon) -Treasury of Scripture Knowledge -Vincent's Word Studies -John Wesley's Notes on the Bible Thanks much in Christ
phatcatholic
well, first trash that list : haha j/k i suppose all of those are nice to have, but since they are all protestant works, they will only be beneficial to you to a certain degree. here are some catholic commentaries that i recommend: --Ronald Knox's 3-volume commentary on the New Testament --The Jerome Biblical Commentary (not to be confused w/ the New Jerome Biblical Commentary) --The Navarre Commentary --The Igantius Catholic Study Bible --Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture (not to be confused w/ the New Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture) --Sacra Pagina series --Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture --Catena Aurea by St. Thomas Aquinas --Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible note that i chose the original versions over the "new" ones b/c newer editions usually include a greater emphasis on the historical-critical method of biblical interpretation, which can be hostile to the faith. for more on the historical-critical method, go here: Hermeneutics and Exegesis http://www.phatmass.com/directory/index.php/cat_id/693 give me a sec and i'll give you links to where you can buy these works the cheapest. and, as always, if you need follow up, just let me know pax christi, phatcatholic
DAF
Thanks, that's why I was asking for the best of the list becasue I figured they were all protestant works. They're for this new e-sword program I got, but good Catholic Bible commentaries that work outside of e-sword would be wonderful. Danke schon in Christ
phatcatholic
ok, i searched the internet, and here's where you can get each commentary the cheapest: Ronald Knox's 3-volume commentary on the New Testament --Vol 1: The Four Gospels, $20 --Vol 2: The Acts of the Apostles and St. Paul's Letters to the Churches, $20.16 --Vol 3: The Later Epistles and the Apocalypse, $20.50 Jerome Biblical Commentary, $16 The Navarre Commentary --go here to get the individual books for the cheapest price. --that page doesn't list the one that just came out on the Minor Prophets, which you can get here, $24.50 --you can also go with the New Testament: Compact Edition ($33.70), which is the condensced 12-volume set into one volume and also doesn't include the New Latin Vulgate alongside the RSV-CE. --you can get the entire 12-volume set on the New Testament all at once for $134.55. it doesn't hurt as much if you just get them one at a time, as you can afford it. Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (they've only done the NT up to and including "Galatians and Ephesians") Catholic Commentary on Holy Scripture, $73 Sacra Pagina series (notice that some of the entries here contain a note w/ a link to purchase the particular book for a cheaper price at Amazon.com) Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture --you can buy the individual books if you want, but its cheaper to just purchase the CD-Rom that contains them all, $284.26 Catena Aurea by St. Thomas Aquinas --also MUCH cheaper to order the CD-Rom instead of the books ($37.50 vs. $108.75) Douay-Rheims Haydock Bible --on CD-Rom for $63.75 or in print for 74.95 --if you keep an eye out on ebay, you can get it cheaper. a haydock bible just went for $43. so, that's an option too. finally, there's one i forgot: A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture, $18 its more of an introduction to each book than a detailed commentary, but it still comes highly acclaimed. i hope that helps pax christi, phatcatholic
phatcatholic
Thanks, that's why I was asking for the best of the list becasue I figured they were all protestant works. Danke schon in Christ
well, if we restrict ourselves to your list, my impression is that the best one is the commentary by Jameson, Fausset, and Brown. it doesn't seem as anti-Catholic and it is highly regarded. The Geneva Bible is severely anti-Catholic. the notes by Scofield and John Wesly are only slightly better. note that i haven't done extensive studies on these commentaries. this is only my impression, for what its worth. phatcatholic
just as an aside, note the wealth of protestant commentaries that come to some very Catholic conclusions about Mat 16: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?showtopic=40791

shortnun
I support the use of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary. The discussion on this topic can be found here: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?s...ical+commentary I'd love to know what commentary you decide to use and how you find it to be benefical to your study of scripture.
