^^ That wasn't directed at Didacus or anybody else, BTW.

This thread just made me think of the Beatles. And my salary. That's all. :D:

It's the beginning of a song by the Beatles called, "Baby you're a rich man." The chorus goes "Baby you're a rich man too." The Beatles were like uber rich and when I hear the song I think they must have been singing it for their society friends, because it's not about me!

Am I the only one who's heard that song? What are they teaching you kids in school nowadays anyway? :P:

But that never takes into account medical expenses. There are families who make less than my dad who actually have gone on vacations. I know I'm sounding the opposite of a lot of this on the thread, but that is something that I've noticed.

I could never be rich cause I would feel guilty all the time no matter how charitable I would be. I think its because of how much Jesus warns us about material wealth in the Bible.
Buying power is what matters.  I don't think the comparison takes that into account at all.

I type this, sitting in a suburb where the average piece of junk 2BR 50s ranch house is going for $450k.  Or, perhaps not going, as the bubble may be bursting.  Hm, wandering off topic now.

(Of course, I'm not stupid enough to live here; I'm just visiting. Gee, am I cranky lately?)

This is a valid point. Just paying for the necessities in an industrialized economy automatically requires making enough money to put you in the top 15% of highest earners in the world. However, what the Global Rich List wants you to consider is that billions of people in the world are living in shacks that most would gladly exchange for an address in one of America's public housing projects. At least 80% of the world lacks the financial means to even think about renting an apartment or buying a home. I doubt they feel much pity for our housing bubble.

But that's not to imply that the world's poor are sad. In fact, they probably lead more joyful and appreciative lives than we do. I think our responsibility is to influence our political leaders to stand up for the civil rights of people in the third world and work to provide food and medical care where it's desperately needed. I like to support programs like Grameen Foundation USA that provide microloans to help establish small businesses in the third world, which helps life people out of poverty. I believe Grameen is a secular non-profit, but Catholic Relief Services also offers microfinance programs. The neat thing about microfinance is that the average loan is very small -- just a couple hundred dollars -- so even giving $10 a month or whatever amount God puts on your heart can go a long way.

But I wonder if it took into account my DEBT how much I would be.  I made a lot of financial mistakes in the past that I am paying for now....

You know, I was wondering the same thing! My student loans, increase living expenses because of the region I live (cost $$$ to heat a home), Canada being one of the most taxed country in the world (we wherre number 1 for a long time for that fact), and ect...

1$ in northern Canada is not necessarily 1$ in Southern Texas...

edit:
And thanks for the comments prose...

Wow,

You are in the top 7.9% richest people in the world. There are 5,525,551,470 people poorer than you.

Some how I think this doesnt take into consideration that I owe more money than in my savings account, nor does it take into account of that in the Western World, our cost of living is probably 10 000 time inflated more than the 3rd world!

I went grocery shopping last night and it cost me over $89 for the basics, milk, eggs, bread, juice, fruit and veggies this doesnt include any meat yet. Gas cost nearly $1.00/ L here.

If you were to factor in the dollar value compared to the cost of living in these underdeveloped countries the porportions would be much closer.

$1.00 in Thailand goes a lot further than $1.00 in Canada

My friend lives off of $1.50/ day when climbing in Thailand
I cant even go to Tim Hortons for that much here, thus we need to earn more money.

I understand the gap between the rich and the poor in the world. All Iam saying is that this poll is not a good representation of the actual situations that people are in. I know many people that can not even spare the one hour of your salary due to difficulties.

True richness is of the treasure in Heaven. Do you build up treasure here on Earth where rust and moth destroy or ever lasting treasure in Heaven where neither rust or moth destroy?

There are good investments to make. You can invest in stocks, bonds, real estate. These will all disappear eventually. Or we can invest in Time, Family, Love, doing good to our neighbours. These investments will yeild great riches!
