Norseman,

Nah, don't work out or play sports. Was never any good. Like I said, I started when I was 23.

Paladin,

Not much worse than all the hormones they inject in our meat, or the Bovine Growth Hormone we drink in our milk, or the residue of mercury in our fish, or the pollution we breathe by walking down the street, or the chemicals we absorb in our skin by walking barefoot in our yards.

peace...

Some things to help motivate you:

1)  Lower insurance premiums.  Keep in mind that lying about tobacco use on an insurance application can be detected by a cotinine level outside the normal reference range in a urine test.  (I work for an insurance company and have dealt with the programming for test results in the past).

2)  Please see CCC 2290, which warns us against the abuse of tobacco.  What constitutes abuse?  Well, does your family have a history of heart disease or cancer?  I have heart disease on my dad's side and cancer on my mom's, so for me any lighting up would be an abuse.  The only question is does this abuse constitute grave matter that is necessary for mortal sin (I'm not going to say you are in mortal sin because smoking is an addiction, and that impacts the free will portion of mortal sin and should not be an issue unless you voluntarily light up a few years after quitting).  The CCC only mentions grave mater in regards to drunkeness and speeding.

norseman, they tested my saliva for that test. How long does it take for nicotine to get out of your system for one of these test? Im an occasional smoker ,basically just when I drink.

Even the vanity thing? Bummer. ;) (If you want me to quit making light of a serious subject you can yell at me. I'll let you get away with it.)

I don't drink cow's milk anymore, I've been drinking organic Soy Milk (stuff with actual FLAVOR) http://www.silkissoy.com. I don't eat seafood.

And I live out in the country, not much pollution here.

I have many relatives who are smokers, and unfortunately my grandmother almost died because of it. After that, she quit cold turkey. Plus with smokers, it's usually more difficult for them to participate in sports and such (has to do something with the lungs).

You are completely misreading this passage of the catechism. This entire paragraph is referring to the virtue of temperance. It is suggesting that all things, alcohol and tobacco and food and medicine are to be used without excess.

Please notice that the list in that section FOOD, MEDICINE and TOBACCO and ALCOHOL are not in and of themselves bad. The Church is suggesting that these things are goods that can be abused and should be used with temperance. If these things were evil or sinful in and of themselves, it would not be allowable to take one drop or one puff. The church isn't saying that at all.

As far as interpreting abuse to mean that if you have a family history of something affected by smoking then your smoking is abuse is just plain silly. That would be like saying to someone with a history of diabetes in their family that they would be abusing food if they ate a cookie when they were 10. Your line of reasoning just doesn't follow.

Sorry, but that's just bad theology.
