Lil Red
ummm, well, my husband's trying to quit. He's actually cut back a lot! He used to smoke 2 packs a day, now he's down to maybe 3 or 4 cigs a day. What he did is try to go longer and longer without a cigarette, then when he would have one, he'd smoke half of it instead of the full thing. I can't say he's totally quit, he still has a problem smoking when he's stressed or competing, but he's doing lots better. Oh, and it helps that I don't let him smoke in the car or house, so if it's cold out, like it is now (27 degrees) he'll wait.
Norseman82
Are you referring to the legal smokes or the illegal ones?????

Norseman82
Some things to help motivate you: 1) Lower insurance premiums. Keep in mind that lying about tobacco use on an insurance application can be detected by a cotinine level outside the normal reference range in a urine test. (I work for an insurance company and have dealt with the programming for test results in the past). 2) Please see CCC 2290, which warns us against the abuse of tobacco. What constitutes abuse? Well, does your family have a history of heart disease or cancer? I have heart disease on my dad's side and cancer on my mom's, so for me any lighting up would be an abuse. The only question is does this abuse constitute grave matter that is necessary for mortal sin (I'm not going to say you are in mortal sin because smoking is an addiction, and that impacts the free will portion of mortal sin and should not be an issue unless you voluntarily light up a few years after quitting). The CCC only mentions grave mater in regards to drunkeness and speeding.
PedroX
I smoke about 1 pack a day. I started when I was 23 (8 years ago) and frankly, I don't want to quit. I had wanted to smoke since I was a kid, and watched Casablanca (Humphrey Bogart was the coolest smoker ever). I don't recommend that people start, but I don't really know that its that big a deal. Just my crazy democrat self talking, I guess. peace...
God Conquers
Pray a rosary for every cigarette you smoke.
IcePrincessKRS
Hmmm.... how about for vanity? Smoking makes your teeth turn yellow and you smell bad. Sorry, I don't mean to poke fun, because I know you really want to quit. Give it up for Advent. I know people who offer things up during Advent just like during Lent. My younger sister used to smoke and gave it up for Lent and has only smoked like twice since then. Offer up it up as a sacrifice for someone you love who needs prayers or for the souls in Purgatory. :)
Mary's Knight, La
the best advice i heard to start or stop doing something is set a 17 day goal (e.g. for the next 17 days i'm not gonna smoke even if it kills me) by day 17 your body and mind adjust to doing or not doing whatever it is(reaching for a smoke) the other thing i learned is 95% of it is determination you do have to have the i'm not gonna do it even if it kills me attitude (works with habitual sins too)
