How do you put on an intellectual air?

Heh. When I get upset or nervous my vocabulary becomes very esoteric. It makes people think I'm trying to be snobby, but I really can't help it!
what on earth is an afterlife-traditionalist?

I didn't know what else to say, but my intention was along the lines of not an annihilationist or universalist.

Oh, I don't know. That might spark some intellectual discussion on matters of faith and *gasp* God.

An annihilationist is one who believes in the final destruction or complete annihilation of the wicked; the eternal punishment consists in annihilation or extinction of being. Such a person is also known in someinstances as a destructionist.

By universalism I mean something very much like unitarian universalism, but particularly their teaching of universal salvation where all people will eventually be saved.

that's all...interesting...

so if all are going to be saved, then wouldn't that mean that there would be no more wicked people to annihalate?

In theory, but then both annihilationism and universalism are theologically flawed, especially universalism in my view because of the rippling of errors it would lead to.

And other than the purgatory bit, I would rather agree with you on most afterlife doctrines.

I don't have to feign. Every now and then people wonder where I am from anyway because of how I speak.
Reading the newspaper and paying attention to what's going on around you is always a good thing to do, but newspapers are written so that non-intellectuals can understand them, as most articles are around the 8th grade reading level.

News is boring. It's only fun when you get to discuss the issues you know something about, but if it doesn't come up much...

I'm still reeling from the fact that airs can be intellectual!

Air (in a snobby tone): Why I think that Marx was, so to speak, full of hot me. He did not want to believe that an ideal socio-economic schema would have to deal with an imperfect populace. He denied fallen nature and it was his downfall.
Person: You don't say!

Yeah well, part of me would rather make the things that make the news happen. That and my mom wouldn't want her daughter flying to some poor and violent part of the world to cover international news. (I was a journalism major for a year and a quarter.) So the best I would get would be news from Washington. At an observer level, I can't interact any more than voting once every few years unless I want to take the time to write over different things where my view may or may not be effective in changing representative votes. Television news is such fluff most of the time or is things that I don't care that much about. I'm sorry, but with all the crimes that occur each day in this country, one single crime doesn't seem so relevant to me most of the time unless they just want to show me a picture of someone to avoid or something. Of course if it is a new tax law or the weather or something, that is nice to know, but if something is beyond my ability to affect and something that doesn't really effect me, then I just don't care that much. There are other things that do effect me more directly and that I can effect more directly, like my life I guess. And as for knowledge about current events for discussions, well I'm sure so many people seemed to give actual reasonable consideration to many of the things that I think matter in a president, but then as we all know the only things that matter in a president is whether he is pro-prenatal-life or not and how he feels about homosexual marriage. (I heard enough repetitive pro-Bush stuff it almost made me want to gag, just by means of explanation, and almost all of it was based on the same two issues, ones which personally I would put more emphasis on for the legislative branch of the government than the executive branch.) So basically part of me is like what for. In theory, it makes sense to follow the news, but the news that most things have just are boring or don't seem relevant or something like that.
Many of the biggest and brightest intellectuals I've known have been B and C students. Very smart, but their minds are often elsewhere from their assigned school work.

I'm one of those people! I never cared about grades because I thought homework was a waste of time. I always had sports, dance, prayer group and Thursday night foreign movies with my mom to keep me occupied in high school. The only class I actually loved was French because I had to learn that from scratch (besides random ballet terms I knew from dancing). My lowest GPA was a 2.375, and my highest was a 4.375. One could say I wasn't very consistent!

I wouldn't worry about putting on an intellectual air. People should accept you for who you are. By looking at me, you'd never guess I was one who scored in the 99th percentile on standardized tests. On the surface, I seem kind of ditzy and preoccupied with the color pink, shopping, guys, and watching reality shows. But get me started on Aristotle's Poetics, the 20th century Catholic revival in literature or medieval mysticism, and I become a total egghead.

I had a friend in college who thought she was intellectually superior to pretty much everybody. She gave me a lecture one night about how we couldn't be roommates because I watched movies like Dumb and Dumber and Zoolander. The intellectual quirks are what make you unique, so don't be afraid to flaunt those! Chances are, the anime people and C students are a lot more interesting to hang out with than the honors kids.
