cappie
As an older person who remembers Mass in the old way we were taught to receive communion kneeling and on the tongue at the altar rails. We had to fast for three hours from all food and drink and Mass was not celebrated in the evening. Today one may receive on the hand, standing and attend Mass at almost any hour. Whilst there are certainly some unfortunate incidents as a young child I was told that the satanists used to leave the church straight after communion and remove the host from their mouths so the same story still does the rounds!! On balance, now as a priest, I believe the practice of communion on the hand is better but people always have the right to receive on the tongue. Cardinal Meri De Val once secretary of State in the 19th Century is reported to have said Jesus said take and eat not take and look at.

IXpenguin21
i don't have a problem with faithful recieving w/ reverance... thats obviously fine. it's when faithful are irreverant, or unfaithful make up their own rules that is the problem. a demand for propper respect and adoration at all times for the Body and Blood of Christ is what i assume we are all in agreement with. Re:Fr Pontifex that short speach is an excelent idea. i recall priests saying that several times in my home parrish/diocies. people are always going to lie. wherever the Lord is at work, the devil has a tent pitched nearby, despite his inevidable failure. perhaps, we can recruit the PhatmasSeals. troops specialy trained to defend the Eucharist "at all costs" armed with an all but deadly holy water cannon (i.e. super soaker), they lurk in the catacombs, sanctuaries, and choir loft... and soon a parrish near you!!! CatholicAndFanatical
how do you know that Christ dwelling in them isn't going to start a revelation in thier life? how do you know if withholding thier desire for Christ, although just in your eyes, wont cause them to feel abandoned? when has Christ withheld anything from his children? who are we to make up His mind? this is all fine if it werent against Church teaching. You must be in the state of grace in order to receive Christ. No ands, if's or buts. perhaps, we can recruit the PhatmasSeals. troops specialy trained to defend the Eucharist "at all costs" armed with an all but deadly holy water cannon (i.e. super soaker), they lurk in the catacombs, sanctuaries, and choir loft... and soon a parrish near you!!! I LOVE this idea..Im so there! And PedroX, yes I am in the Lafayette Diocese, in Kokomo as a matter of fact. I attend St. Joan of Arc Parish. Where you from?? CatholicAndFanatical
Thanks Father for your input, Id still like to know what us laymen can do to lessen the mediocrity in the Church, get more people involved with Ministries and get people more excited about receiving Christ. megrc
I'm an EEM and I can't tell you how many times people come to receive Christ and they try to walk away without consuming, I just politly tapp them on the shoulder and ask them to please consume the eucharist before walking away. I know this interupts the flow of Communion, but I would rather interupt the flow than to let someone just walk away with Christ in their hands. I have also been asked not to do this because it interupts everything, but I never have been one to go with the flow. And about the receiving in the hands or on the tounge. I used to receive in my hands, but then I went and spent time with Consecrated women and they all receive on the tounge, and after mass one day I talked to them about it and I now understand the reverance issue. IXpenguin21
i'm also an EEM or EME or whatever, and i just rememebred a funny story.... my last Mass at home before leaving for school this semester was said w/o any electricity, because the power went out. at comunion time, more recieved by mouth than i've ever had before on my line. i couldn't tell you how many time i missed their mouth because i misjudged the distance in the darkness. my friend was also an EME that night and told me he experienced the same thing, missing some woman so bad, he hit her in the nose.
