[quote name='Socrates' date='Nov 15 2005, 06:55 PM']Dreams are basically just static feedback from the brain.  They reflect waking events, thoughts, and feelings, but generally don't have much deep significance.  At least mine don't.  It's essentially garbage in, garbage out.
God may occasionally speak in to people in dreams, but these are more like visions, and from what I understand seem quite different from our ordinary night-to-night dreams.
I don't think most people's dreams should be interpreted as omens or "messages from God."
I think people should generally not put much stock in their dreams one way or another.

And I believe "dream interpretation" is silly nonsense.  It has no more credibility than astrology and horoscopes.  Dream interpretation is silly pop psychobabble at best  and is sinful and dangerous superstition at worst.

Note the vague, somewhat flattering fortune-cookie tones of the "interpretation" of Sojourner's dream.  One can find nice and pretty "meanings" or "symbolism" to any dreams.  I would guess that the "meaning" is probably less poetic, but more literal and mundane - merely that she has an interest at some level in getting a new home.

I agree with Socrates here. What most people think of as dream interpretation is just a new age stuff. Every time I try to interpret one of my dreams as God speaking to me, I usually end up being wrong :topsy:

I realize that the edited version of my friend's interpretation was fairly innocuos -- I took out quite a bit of more personal stuff.

I agree that dream interpretation from a source that doesn't know you well is an iffy proposition. But from someone who knows you well, it can be helpful to try to sort out the imagery your mind comes up with. I don't think my dreams are necessarily "messages from God" but I do think they can be a means of emotional processing, and it's helpful to understand what's going on. I actually started talking to my friend about dreams after having a series of nightmares .... as we talked about them and the possible meanings the imagery could have, I realized what it was that I wasn't dealing with that was coming out in my dreams. It was actually very helpful.
