death during sin

Presuming the sin is entered into freely and willingly with an intention to turn away from God then one could make a prudental judgement that the person by rejecting God would condem himself to a place of separation from God which we call hell

From the Catechism:

1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire." The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

It goes to the intention as much as the act. The fact that the act is not completed does not mitigate the sin, but ultimate judgement is of course up to God.
