DAF
This question just came to me. Okay, so I know that confession has to be made oral/aurally, but what sort of exceptions does the Church make for say...people who are deaf and/or mute? What about people who stutter? What about any other sort of problem that would normally prevent a typical confession? Thanks, in Christ
cappie
People who are deaf or mute may write down their confession if possible but it is not necessary. I have had this experience for a deaf and mute person, they write down the confession and I write the penance. In the case of someone who does not speak English an interpreter may be used, the interpreter is under the same seal as the priest. Can. 990 No one is forbidden to confess through an interpreter, provided however that abuse and scandal are avoided, and without prejudice to the provision of can. 983 §2. Can. 983 §1 The sacramental seal is inviolable. Accordingly, it is absolutely wrong for a confessor in any way to betray the penitent, for any reason whatsoever, whether by word or in any other fashion. §2 An interpreter, if there is one, is also obliged to observe this secret, as are all others who in any way whatever have come to a knowledge of sins from a confession.
