Dave
At my new parish, after Communion the priest has all the children come up and gather around him, and he gives them a special blessing, in which he makes the sign of the cross over each one using the ciborium containing the leftover Hosts. He doesn't do it on the altar either; he goes out into the middle of the congregation in the center aisle! Since the priest isn't supposed to leave the altar during the Sign of Peace, I find it highly doubtful that leaving the altar for that would be allowed either. But what do y'all think about this whole business of blessing the kids with the ciborium? Would it be allowable, not allowable, etc.?
Petrus
I don't like the idea of the blessing, it changes the Mass too much. Anyway, the priest gives a general blessing to everyone right before the end of Mass. Isn't blessing the congregation part of what exposition of the Eucharist is for? God Conquers
hmmm, strange. It seems a little unorthodox, although the idea I guess is good. I've never heard of a ciborium blessing before. However, sign-of-peace is before distribution of communion, and you're talking about afterwards and I think that changes things a bit.
Aloysius
actually, i think that sounds really cool. you know how he made the apostles let the children come to Him and He blessed them and such. i think this Eucharistic blessing of the children would please our Lord. it is not illicit (going against Church teaching) since the Consecration and distribution has already taken place, the priest may leave the altar then. immaculata
When I was in grade school, the priest used to give a special blessing to the kindergarteners and first graders who hadn't made their First Communion yet. This was right after he finished distributing communion, before he went back to the altar to do the ablutions.. hmmmmmm
