Catholic Metal?

Are there any Catholic metal bands out there?

I'm mainly thinking dark European black/death metal inspired by medieval-ish Catholic imagery, not American hard rock bands singing about Jesus -- if you know what I mean.

There are quite a few Christian black/death metal bands out there, but quite a few of them are against organzied Christianity for whatever reason. The only specific Catholic band I can think of is Seven Sorrows, and they're American (there's nothing wrong with American bands, but I know what you mean).

When DemonSlayer comes around, I'm sure he can name a few other bands that would be up your alley.

There's no black metal/death metal bands that I know, except Illuminandi who are gothic metal and Cavaleiros Consagrados who are doom metal; all the others are progressive/power metal bands from Brazil.

Other than that, there are a lot of Christian black metal bands such as Sanctifica (rip), Sylvan Fortress, Slechtvalk and Crimson Moonlight.

That's what I keep hearing from metalheads. Apparently there's a ton of stuff out there, but most of it is anti-Catholic, portraying the Church as evil and conspiratorial and other such shenanigans.

I'll check out that Illuminandi for sure. Thanks for the tip.

I'm guessing they have to take their angst out on something.

Hey would Extol count?...They're older stuff (Undecieved, Burial) not this Blueprint Dives trash.

I cant imagine Catholic metal would be any good. The bulk of christian music I have heard is pretty awful, and the bulf of metal I have heard is awful.

Put those two together and you might as well shoot me in the stomach.

i registered for this board solely because i saw this post...

the majority of metalheads out there that i am aware of are actually Catholics (mostly non-practicing), and then ex-Protestants or non-adherents of any religion. the anti-Christianity and satanic imagery (few people are actually members of the late Lavey's Church) is something that most people pretend to be into in order to fit in. which is terribly ironic, considering that metal was started by a band whose first singer wrote Christian lyrics; Black Sabbath. read the lyrics to their first four albums (pre-Dio) and you'll see what i mean. i don't know if he's Catholic or Anglican, though. i can't comment on his solo stuff as i've not listened to it and he kinda went weird then, but i do know that while in Sabbath, he was asked if what he was doing was satanic and he said,"I bloody hope not!!!" (on that note, i hope that i didn't make a TOS violation by not editing that quote...)

the same thing goes for death metal, amazingly; Chuck Schuldiner (RIP), vocalist and founding member of Death, was a Christian. not sure what branch. there are many lesser-known metal bands that are not "Christian," but have Christian lyricists and members and are some of the best in their particular genre, and even more with merely members. a guitarist for Slayer right now is Catholic. someone in Dream Theater awhile ago was. for some reason(s), Catholics are more likely to be members of metal bands.

anyhow, here's some mainstream bands that are like what i mentioned before:

Sleep
Trouble (just reunited!)
St. Vitus
High on Fire

they're all stoner rock or doom metal bands in the vein of Black Sabbath or much heavier. only HoF and the other are active. Trouble is Protestant. no idea about the rest. i might be missing one...

it's so ironic that metal and rock (created by black gospel artists in the south) are for the most part reactionary towards Christianity, when that is what they started out as...

i hope i've been of some help... and didn't sound like i was trying to sound smart...

The Sabbath song "After Forever", while sounding Christian, has the line "Would you want to see the Pope on a rope - do you think he's a fool",

Also, while some members of secular metal bands are Catholic, they're likely to be mostly lapsed Catholics, such as Tom Arraya from Slayer; while lead guitarist MIchael Weikath from Helloween seems to still be practising, and a few of their songs has Christian themes.
