Girl Expelled from Catholic School

I also had some questions about how the situation was handled. She goes into more detail about it in the comments section of the thread. Although my questions weren't totally answered, I do feel a bit better about it. I definitely do want more details, though.

I don't think it was libel because she didn't name names until the local newspaper did. By then it was public knowledge and I think she was just defending her mother's actions. But I'm no expert.

This is heartbreaking. This school and community need our prayers folks!

:bump:

C'mon phamily.....what are your thoughts...? This could potentially impact ANYONE in high school or college.

What are your thoughts, wonders, hopes, fear, and desires about this issue. It is a big deal......a really big deal.

I will comment about it a little later.

I've just finished reading the latest comments on Katelyn's blog.

I actually cried because of some of the comments posted towards Katelyn. The amount of cruelty and vindictiveness, especially from those in her high school community is incredibly sad.

The amount of people who voiced support for murdering innocent children just breaks my heart. It is also a sharp reminder of the sad state of this world.

I hope that this situation will bring attention to the many so-called Catholic schools that do not follow the Church faithfully and trigger some sort of reform that is badly needed.

No student in a Catholic school should ever be taunted by peers and expelled by the school for upholding Catholic values. What kind of message does that send? Then again, Christ did tell us we would be persecuted. But by the people who call themselves Catholic as well? Sad.

Katelyn's school has yet to provide specific examples of the claims they make against Katelyn and her family.
If she was expelled for blogging, that's a First Amendment violation.I'm very curious as to what the legal ramifications of this will be.
How can it be libel if you're reporting the facts?

It isn't. But we don't know that she has only reported facts. It only takes a slight hyperbole to form libel. We are seeing a primary source of which we cannot know the validity. Judging solely on my time with primary sources in history, and looking at her profile, I am not sure I would take it as 100% true. She struck me as a "Barking Dog" Republican. It is the Barking Dog part that has me question how true everything is.

God's Errand Girl

Drama teacher, huh? That pretty much explains it.

(If you don't get it, then don't waste your time trying to figure it out.)
administration's outrageous charges that our family has engaged in "threats," "abuse," and other "malicious" behavior toward members of the Loretto community.
So it sounds like the school did dismiss her based on grounds of defaming the teacher and/or libel.

The school's statement (and from reading her blog, it seems true)
The Sillses' "attacks" included "taunts, threats and verbal abuse directed against members of our school community, as well as a mass e-mail campaign slandering the school's reputation as a Catholic institution," wrote Loretto's president, Sister Helen Timothy, in a statement.
I would say I have to agree with Iacobus - I'm not going to take a side just yet. There is a line between standing up for your beliefs and abusing those who you do not think agree with your beliefs strongly enough. It is something that is not always easily determined, especially through something as informal as a blog.

Just an update

The girl has almost 2000 comments on the whole expulsion matter. People are commenting from all over the world and some major pro life folk are asking to get involved.

I would strongly suggest to any of the teens that are on this site to visit her blog. If her expulsion has anything to do with her family's stance on pro life or her blogging about it, I think it would be important to read.

From a culture of life standpoint, reading through the comments is heartbreaking. To see students from an all girl's Catholic school denounce her for (her mom) standing up for the unborn and for their school is confounding.
