theculturewarrior
Please pray for me. I am discerning a call. I feel the same sense of vocation that seminarians must feel, but I am not hearing a call to consecrated life. I am wondering if I am called to law school. That must sound strange even and especially to lawyers. Let me explain. I am a dreamer. I have a new dream every week. My coworkers often rolls their eyes when I tell them daily how I plan on spending the rest of my life, and usually, it's a different plan every day. I think this day is different. One of the dreams I keep coming back to is law school. One of the reasons I dreamed this dream, is because I have seen injustice, and I want to make it right. I remember wanting to be an attorney to help people who were abused in institutions that have gone corrupt. I have heard stories of abuse in mental hospitals and homes for the mentally retarded. And nursing homes and abortion clinics. And churches. Anywhere people think they can get away with their crimes, abuses happen. I wanted to bring justice to those who had been victimized. I had put this dream aside. I had recently dreamed of becoming a lawyer, but only because I wanted to be able to buy groceries at the end of the month. I was finally putting aside all dreams and was ready to be content working as a reference librarian for the rest of my life. Then I met someone who was abused in a mental hospital. She was raped by her psychiatrist. She went there because she needed help. She went in with one disorder and left with two (PTSD). She needs medicine for the one, but she's afraid to take them because of the other. They used to shove pills down her throat like she was a dog, and when she takes her medicine, memories of that and the abuse come flooding back. Talking to her has made me wonder if my dream is God's will. I've been praying for discerment. I can barely think about anything else. Today, as I was praying for discernment, a sense of cold determination came over me. It is still with me. I think this is how the warrior-monks of the Crusades must have felt. I am preparing myself for battle, knowing that if this is God's will, there will be trials and persecution awaiting me. I am ready for all. I want to show rapists and pedophiles God's mercy, but I know there is no mercy for them without justice, and they need to be humbled. They need to be thoroughly chastised or they will never repent. Sending them to prison is an act of mercy. I have another friend who was abused by a priest, and I've been thinking, he sees the Eucharist the same way my friend sees her medicine! I am ready for war. I remember a thread on Phatmass that said, "if you could be a Patron Saint, what would you be the Patron Saint of?" I was thinking, why wait until we get to Heaven? I might be a Patron Saint someday. I hope and pray that it be. In the meanwhile, we are the communion of saints. We are the saints, and I'm ready to take my friends and every one like them under my patronage. If it pleases God, I offer Him my life as a sacrifice for them, and I will sacrifice every second of my life for them. His will be done. I am not longer a culture warrior. I haven't been for a long time. I am now a spiritual warrior. When David met Goliath, he met him running.
morostheos
That is AWESOME! I know exactly what you mean, with the whole vocation thing. You can have a call to a certain occupation just the same as a call to the religious life. Prayers for you and your possible vocation as a lawyer! We definitely need more good Catholic lawyers. Anastasia13
Have you ever read The Street Lawyer by Grisham? It's one of my fav books. A lawyer who is in a really nice but busy and well paid job experiences an incident with a poor man who wants revenge or something and he is forced to confront the reality that exists beyond his nice oblivious life. It's really cool cause like he totally changes and works for small law place to help the underpriviledged and needy. It's such a cool book. It would be awesome if you were a lawyer to help people, at least as long as that is what you are called to do. I knew there was something I liked about you. Ok, yeah, right. Discernment and all that. I'll say a prayer for you before I go to bed tonight.

Norseman82
If this pans out, kudos to you! Please discern carefully, because the legal profession requires a lot of schooling and effort and committment.
Correction: you should say "I am not longer only a culture warrior", because the "culture war" is one of the many battles in the spiritual war to be fought. Your spiritual battles will lead you to fight battles in the culture war. Of course, maybe this realization is necessary to help you fight the culture wars more effectively. Seven77
yeah!!!!!! ive also been feeling the spiritual warrior thing lately. it has alot to do with All Saints day. Rom.13v14 has been sticking out in my mind--Christ Himself is the armor "put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires."
