geetarplayer
Curious, and I'll talk about my opinion after I get a few responses. But I don't want my opinion to influence anyone else's decisions. I'll say what I would have said before today. -Mark
Seatbelt Blue
Unless they're going around shouting YHWH, they aren't doing it.
L5
Sometimes my friend might say "Jesus Christ" and then I reply in a way as if I thought he wasn't taking his name in Vain...like "What about him?" or maybe "Well, I dunno if He can help you here." Spiritual_Arsonist
When someone uses the Lord's name in vain, I say this silent prayer: Blessed be the name of the Lord, now, and forever. Glory to the father...
Seatbelt Blue
Addendum: God is not the Name of God, although it's the standard English appellation. It's a name derived from a germanic Pagan deity which, originally applied to all gods, came to become the name bestowed upon THE God. So it's really more His Species than His Name. Paladin D
I tell them that they're going to hell, it's funny. No kidding, actually... I do all of them except for number 1 and 5. Sometimes I ask them to watch their mouth, sometimes I stay silent, and sometimes I make the Sign of the Cross and pray. But at times, I would make remarks such as... Person - "I hit my toe on the G-beaver dam table!" Paladin D - "I didn't know God damned that table..."
Aloysius
~1, while God isn't His Name, it's still in the same spirit of using God in vain. also, Yahweh and Jesus Christ are the name of God. the name of GOd is Father, Son, and Holy SPirit also. in the Hebrew tradition, a name was the very essence of who the person is. if God's essence is God, regardless of whether or not the actual sound of the name is uttered shouting God in vain is taking the Name of the Lord in vain. anyway, i always try to bow my head. if they notice, they notice. if not, they don't. sometimes i'd be like "WHERE!!??" and turn around as if they had seen Him. i like that "i didn't know God damned that table" paladin. i'm gonna try that and add somethin like "i wonder if tables get their own hell, or they just go to the same hell as everyone else who doesn't take God seriously." littleflower+JMJ
i tell them please dont' cuss around me. at all. and all the peeps listen. (and no, its not cuz im mean and i'll beat them up. im really nice) and it was cool cuz after awhile...ALL my friends stopped cussign!! one friend, who wasnt' even catholic tried for lent to stop cussing! it was cool!! anyways. they would stop after i told them how intelligent they would sound if htey would stop saying a cuss word between every other word. and then they would really get embarassed when they would try to get me by cussing at me to see what i'll do/say and i'll tell them "you poor thing! your vocabulary is limited to only four letter words!!" LOL it was funny. so they got in the habit of not cussing around me. but they know...no cuss words around me, or dirty jokes, and if they accidently use the Lords name in vain, they repent right there. hahaha and even with the finger. i got them to stop when i said one time..."look! his showing us how far he can count!" TRY IT, it worked for me. they actually realized what i was saying was true. ps. but that worked in high school cuz they were my friends. !!!!! lol if they were anyone else i would have gotten shot or something....for real. i just say a prayer when i dont know them. Thomas Michael
Whenever I hear someone uttering offensive words, I just pray in my mind to God, asking him to forgive that person. Which means that I pray for Howard Stern a lot.

Dave
Here's a good prayer to pray in reparation for blaspemy; it's called the Golden Arrow prayer: May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable, most mysterious and unutterable Name of God be always praised, blessed, loved, adored, and glorified in heaven, on earth, and under the earth by all the creatures of God and by the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. geetarplayer
Here's my interesting spin: Voltaire said, "I don't agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." But also consider that your fist must end where my nose begins. Basically it isn't fair for you to use your rights to trample all over mine. I voted the "watch your mouth" choice because that's what I would have normally done before today. Today, however, I realized that in the modern world, people have the right to express themselves. Now, unless they are deliberately going out of their way to upset you by using the Lord's name in vain, do you have the right to tell them to knock it off? (That's not a rhetorical question, I'd really like someone to answer it for me.) -Mark
littleflower+JMJ
if they see no problem with it, i usually tell them, how would you feel if i used your name to cuss and use in vain?
