Eutychus
If any of you are of Irish decent, or your relatives are, this will be big next week, so we all need to be prepared. Just how does one handle this when our relatives point out to us, all these news stories that seem to come endlessly?
Ireland to report on Catholic Church abuse cover-up Tue Oct 25, 2005 12:28 PM BST8 { Small snip of the entire story...} By Paul Hoskins and Kevin Smith DUBLIN (Reuters) - The Irish government is due to publish the results on Tuesday of a state probe into claims the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland covered up the sexual abuse of young people by priests over several decades. The 270-page report, which stems from an investigation begun in 2002, is expected to detail the Church's handling of more than 100 allegations of abuse against dozens of priests in the diocese of Ferns in County Wexford dating back to the mid-1960s. The findings are likely to reignite public anger in mostly Catholic Ireland after a string of clerical sex abuse scandals.
LINK TO FULL NEWS STORY My family will be tossing this one at me next....will this never end? toledo_jesus
I wonder why most of these reports only go back to the mid 20th century.
journeyman
Reading a short biography of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, founder of the Society of Mary, I discovered the following nuggets: 1835 - Narcisse Roussel, ex seminarian from St. Claude Diocese enters novitiate at Madeleine. 1838 - Roussel appointed director of the SM college in St. Hipplyte. In December, ordained - dismissorial letters from St. Claude make no mention of fact Roussel expelled from seminary for sexual misconduct In March, dismisses his own brother Philippe from staff at St. Hyppolyte for molesting several students. In May reports of Narcisse abusing students reaches Chaminade - immediately recalls him 1839 - Roussel organizes committee of zeal and persevereance - soon obliged to quit for same reason 1842 - Roussel instigates purchase of St. Anne's - novitiate for lay religious moved there 1843 - Sexual advances reported 1844 - Roussell leaves for Realmont 1845 - Roussel seduces Francois Hippolyte Herail, a novice, who later went on to a career of leadership in the Society 1847 - Roussel makes general confession in Paris and writes Superior General of the Society for forgiveness This isn't just a "modern" problem - neither the sexual, nor the charity with which the Church treats the offenders
