MC Just
MC Just, you should really make a song about the whole "Rapture" trap. That would be amesome. It's funny, every now and then, people claim THE END is near. I bet people during the World Wars thought the same exact thing... Hitler being the Anti-Christ and all. Don't worry on MC Just "Rapologetics" I will have plenty of juicy snacks packed in my raps, even Darby's rapture trap. Ha HA!

Lil Red
I have a real problem with books that leave no room for God's grace and mercy. God would NEVER leave behind one of his children that truly wants to be with Him.

Norseman82
Next time they try to talk to you about the rapture, ask them what they mean and where they find it in the bible. They will probably refer to 1 Thes. 4:13-17. My question to them would be "How do you know it just isn't talking about the last judgement?" CatholicAndFanatical
Norse, I have spoke to my mom about this and she brings up that in Revelations it talks about Jesus coming and leaves, stays gone for 1000 years while the devil takes over the world and then Jesus returns to take back those that were still here.. but THEN, she goes on to say that the only way we could get to heaven during the 1000 years is if we get our heads cut off..I dont remember reading that in scriptures
Anna
This is a great topic, and one which has recently been discussed among an e-group of Catholic scholars with whom I am privileged to email. I am basically copying one of the emails I just recently received, but I've changed the tense of some of the words, etc. (In other words, no folks, I'm not as smart as I might sound in the words below!) Tim Lehaye is a virulent anti-Catholic, which he documents in his book on why he wrote the Left Behind series... There are three books which cover some of the same ("Rapture") territory, but all three have different emphases. The Rapture Trap (by Paul Thigpen) is more of an introductory work and provides an excellent overview of the basic issues. Rapture: The end times error that leaves the Bible behind (by David B. Currie) focuses almost exclusively on the biblical texts and is very good in that regard; it is recommended it for its exegesis of key passages, including Daniel, the Book of Revelation, the Olivet Discourse, etc. It is quite detailed and well-documented. Will Catholics be Left Behind?(by Carl Olson) examines a number of topics, not just the Rapture. The reason for this is that the Rapture is just one part of a large and complex theological system called premillennial dispensationalism. That system affects how its adherents interpret Scripture, view history, and understand the person of Christ, the nature of the Church, the reality of the Kingdom, and the "end times." Olson examines all of these key issues in his book, plus many more. He also places great emphasis on quoting from actual dispensationalist/Rapturist sources, and so his book has some 700 footnotes (and is 400 pages long). Here is a table contents: PART ONE: The Story of the Rapture . . . and So Much More 1. The Parousia, the Rapture, and the End Times 2. Catholics and the Left Behind Phenomenon 3. Book of Confusion or Revelation? 4. The Millennium: How Long is a Thousand Years? 5. Millenarianism: Early Church to John Nelson Darby 6. Dispensationalism and the Rapture in America PART TWO: A Catholic Critique of Dispensationalism 7. The Kingdom, the Church, and Israel 8. "Bible Prophecy" and Interpreting Scripture 9. Unwrapping the Rapture 10. Conclusion: The Catholic Vision Glossary of Key Terms List of Key Persons Selected Bibliography More info can be found on Carl Olson's website: www.carl-olson.com, along with endorsements from Dr. Thigpen, Karl Keating, Mark Shea, Michael O'Brien, Steve Ray, and Fr. Mitch Pacwa. ...Other good Catholic references: Is Jesus Coming Soon? (by Ralph Martin) (Back to my own words now) This is a great thread; timely and much needed. Some really sincere Catholics (Eucharistic Ministers!) friends of mine are all into that series. Ya gotta be soooooo careful! But, even before I got to marielapin's post, I was thinking the same thing: remind your loved ones that these are fictional stories, using little tidbits out of the Bible, basically twisting Biblical Truths to make for a juicey, multi-million dollar best selling fiction book. It's not about saving souls, and should not be taken literally! Pax Christi. <>< Edited December 9, 2003 by Anna
