Dust or anyone...did you hear about...

I got an email hitting me up for money from Catholic Answers and their email said.....

"That's because we host and manage the site EVERY DAY of every month. And every month it costs approximately $10,000 to keep Catholic Answers Forums on the Internet. "

Holy Cow....can anyone tell me how it would cost that much? :idontknow:
I know about webpages, servers, forums...but it just doesn't add up. Did they hire some moderators at $20 an hour or something? Or do they pay priests like $50 per question they answer?

I am sure Catholic Answers isn't lying about the money they spend, but it just seem outrageous to me.....especially since later in the email it says that the forum run a deficit of over $8000 a month.

I think a lot of it must be the bandwith or something.......the site hosts all those articles, etc + the forums which are fairly busy at times. I know cause I hang out there trying to defend little things like birthdays and Christmas from the misguided cult members that think they are the right relgiion..........

They are either 1) Getting ripped off by a server company who is taking advantage of them or 2) they are spending money that doesn't need to be spent. I don't like the Catholic Answers forum.

Well, they also broadcast daily on EWTN radio, and all those production costs add up.

I wonder how much they spend on postage for all their "I need money" letters? Getting at least one appeal a week is overkill and tends to cause people to "tune them out".

I agree on the frequency issue ... I think they're using e-mail, though, which cuts down on postage.

true, but their email said "the forum" costs that much money...not their whole website. so unless they are misleading people, which I hope not. I don't think anyone uses $10,000 worth of bandwidth. I mean phatmass probably only costs a few hundred a month. (but I doubt that much)

true, but again, the email only said "the forum costs $10,000+ a month) so I wouldn't even want to know how much the rest is.

Someone should write back an email and tell them to use a free server...hehehehehehe, and use phatmassers for moderators...hehehee

hahahaha I know what you mean. I like when they say "we need money to send "pillar of fire..." books to WYD, and then they enclose a free book in the envelope. so who knows how many people are on their mailing list, but probably tens of thousands of free books they sent out, that they could have just sent to wyd.

they are also bad in business because they don't keep a good database. I would get mailings with my name at 2 different addresses, then I would get 2 mailings at my current address, but with my name spelled differently. If someone just took a minute (or got a computer program) to figure out all the duplicates, tons of money would be saved.

I heard Patrick Madrid has a bad relationship with CA (he used to work there), saying that they concentrate too much on raising money.

I have heard some suspicious things about them. I believe it was Robert Sungenis of CAI who said that they like to come up with these emergency fund raising techniques even when things aren't going as bad as they claim. Patrick Madrid who worked for CA said that Karl Keating is hard to get along with.

Don't get me wrong I like CA. I learned alot from them and they do employ around 40 people. But there are somethings that bug me about them.

1) Don't gossip about Pat Madrid and Catholic Answers. Unless you can quote what Pat Madrid supposedly thinks about them, don't spread rumors.

2) If you have questions about Catholic Answers, why not email them and ask. Or better yet, give them a call.
