Brother Adam
Aparently I've been landed with the worst all time tenured teacher at FUS. His teaching and grading policies are excessively poor and biased. For grades of "A" or "B" you have to be able to 'teach him about the topic' (in other words synthesize the material that he gives you in such a way that you tell him something he could have not figured out on his own) on top of having a 'perfect paper'. I got a C- on my last essay for "not quite including enough biographical detail in your opening paragraph on an author (that included more than half a dozen facts from several volumes, remember this is one paragraph), to which he never specified any differently. I've got about a 3.9 GPA right now and I have a 1.7 in the class. Most of those with honors long since dropped it, but I don't see why the rest of us should have to put up with it. On top of it, I talked to several faculty members who, in confidence, shared that he is a jerk and they 'hate all of his complaining'. Brother Adam
oh...and I have decided not to persue my MA at FUS because he also teaches MA classes in which he is the only teacher.
photosynthesis
I'd just offer it up and get through the class. it'll build character! I usually find teachers that want you to teach them are just using their students to do academic research that THEY should be doing. Except some ideas from your papers to end up in one of his books with no credit given to you
Brother Adam
And it is fine if you vote smell of elderberries it up, but if you bought a copier for $1500 and it didn't work, would you smell of elderberries it up? If you paid $1500 for a class and the teacher didn't have a beaver dam clue what he was doing, would you smell of elderberries it up?
Brother Adam
And dont' get me wrong, I love challenging teachers. I hate 'fluff' classes where everyone gets an "A". I love having hard texts, working through them, and doing your best, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Somewhere he thought this was a doctoral program? cmotherofpirl
Can you beat him at his own game? Have you talked to anyone who has ever done well in his class? What does your faculty advisor say? Any FUS grads have advice?

Grads: You can try and take it another year with a different teacher, but he typical is the only one to teach it. And I've looked at his grade reports cause I work for registrars. Most people fail or drop the class. About 1/3 pass with B- to D+. Only on rare occassion did I see an A- (one or two of them) Edited October 14, 2005 by Brother Adam

Andrea348
i had a really hard professor for an aurals class (ear training, sight-singing, etc.) i was doing TERRIBLE in the class so i ended up dropping it. it was the third in a sequence of four aurals classes, so i had to repeat it. it was the best move i ever made. i actually continued going to class to learn the information (dork, i know), and took it the next semester. there was a different teacher and i did soooo much better. one thing to remember is that withdraws do not look so good on your transcript, so make sure you have a good reason and try to only have this one. most people will understand one withdraw. the class really sounds though....i'd drop it....maybe by the grace of God someone else will be teaching it next semester
theculturewarrior
Before you take any class, at any university, go to the reference desk at the university library, and ask the part-timers who the most unreasonable professors are. Knowledge is power.
toledo_jesus
drop the class. do you get your money back? do you get to choose which class to take if there is one taught by a different prof? do you really need this class? or smell of elderberries it up if it's impossible to get around it or get your money back. if you have a 3.9 and you get a C+ in his class it won't kill you...Though it is kind of stupid for him to expect you to teach him something. He is the expert here...
Brother Adam
The catechetics department requires the class for my major (It's wierd really. It is a Theology class, the Catechetics department is the only one that requires it, and he teaches it like it is philosophy...seriously, Aristotle was the first book we read). Chances are fairly decent he will be the only one to ever teach it. I already have 1 withdraw on my transcript and don't really want another, but in my field most prospective employers (priests) want to know more about what you know than what kind of grades you got (as long as they are somewhat decent). This just shouldn't be something that one should have to deal with at FUS. Crazy stupid. Oh well time to get ready for RCIA. I answer all of the apologetic questions so I gotta be on my feet.
