Sojourner
OK, so one of my co-workers is the sweetest, kindest woman on earth. She's very active with her church, and they're in the process of getting a community center off the ground. The center is going to include a thrift store (I think) and so she asked several of us at work to participate in an upcoming fashion show to highlight the center's services and to raise money. She wanted folks of all different shapes and sizes to model clothes for the show, and so I and a couple other people agreed to do it. Last night, one of the other girls and I went over to pick out our outfits. We'd thought that they were getting donated outfits from stores, but they're really wanting us to model the used stuff they've gotten in. We each had to find three outfits, complete with jewelry, shoes, and handbags. I enjoy thrift store shopping, and don't mind wearing used clothes if the occasion suits. These are the UGLIEST clothes I have ever seen in my life. I can't think of one thing I tried on that I'd ever, ever wear someplace else. Ever. Ever. But I will do this because I've already agreed to it. Next time I'll ask better questions about what I'm agreeing to do. There's one other woman who's going to participate in the show (my boss) who has yet to go pick out her clothes. We decided not to tell her. Is there anyway to use accesories to take focus off of them? Like a cute scarf to cover up some of the ugliness of the clothes?

We both walked out of the center, got in the car, closed the doors, sat there for a moment and then I said, "We can't tell R-----." "No, we can't." "Good. Let's go." The accessories are part of what make the whole situation so awful. Funny you should mention the scarf -- one that the other girl has to wear is a beaded handkerchiefy thing with lots of pink and bears on it. It's so hideous it's laughable. On the plus side, the show happens the night I have a Halloween party, so I'll have my costume already. Apparently we're getting our hair done too. I'm guessing this is going to involve lots of teasing and hairspray. I'm afraid. Very afraid.

Sojourner
The other thing that was funny is that the coordinator chick -- who is about 60 and obviously not into fashion herself -- was trying to tell my housemate -- who reads fashion magazines at least once a week -- what's "hot in New York." Apparently it's seashells.

Seashells are NOT in here! Right now its those awesome bohemian skirts.
Sojourner
I am a fan of bohemian skirts, although I don't currently own one. I am also a fan of seashells ... but not so much of wearing them. In Indiana. In October. This woman, however, appeared to be quite serious about her feelings on seashells. I am doing this out of love for my friend, but I am glad no one I know will be there. Oh, horrible thought ... what if there are PICTURES!!!
