jasJis
Great song lyrics can't help but have some 'Truth' in them. How much is open to debate and your personal perspective. Just as RED can be blood, a fire, or danger, it can also be a flower breaking through the winter or in the promise of a sunrise. We usually find what we look for. Carrie
I love that album. It's a great one to play REALLY LOUD while you're getting ready in the morning or cleaning. Or cooking. jasJis
Jas, you asked someone to post, so here it is via Lyrics.com: Don't want to be an American idiot. Don't want a nation under the new media. And can you hear the sound of hysteria? The subliminal mind*** America. Welcome to a new kind of tension. All across the alien nation. Everything isn't meant to be okay. Television dreams of tomorrow. We're not the ones who're meant to follow. Well that's enough to argue. Well maybe I'm the f*****t America. I'm not a part of a redneck agenda. Now everybody do the propaganda. And sing along in the age of paranoia. Welcome to a new kind of tension. All across the alien nation. Everything isn't meant to be okay. Television dreams of tomorrow. We're not the ones who're meant to follow. Well that's enough to argue. Don't want to be an American idiot. One nation controlled by the media. Information age of hysteria. It's going out to idiot America. Welcome to a new kind of tension. All across the alien nation. Everything isn't meant to be okay. Television dreams of tomorrow. We're not the ones who're meant to follow. Well that's enough to argue.
How is that anti-Bush? To me it's a condemnation of the American Public that belives the shallow 'analysis' that is pumped out by the agenda driven Media. The Mass Media Machine (as I like to call it) creates hysteria and extreme to make things interesting so people will watch and boost the rating so they can sell commericials. It has nothing to do with telling the truth, telling the whole story, etc. The MMM is about grabbing our attention and it tells us what to think to make it more controversial and interesting so they can keep out attention. I especially like the the lyrics: "We're not the ones who're meant to follow. Well thats enough to argue." It has so many meanings on different levels. Who is the 'we'? Americans, the MMM, the band Green Day? And by saying that, have 'they' gone against the MMM message gotten us to ponder a little bit, to discuss, to argue, to listen to different perspectives? Carrie
I agree with you jas, but I do think there are some references to Bush and his views in those lyrics. Specifically, I believe they are making some commentary on Bush's views on homosexual marriages and such here:
Well maybe I'm the f*****t America. I'm not a part of a redneck agenda. Now everybody do the propaganda. And sing along in the age of paranoia.
jasJis
LOL. That has nothing to do with Bush's policy on gay marriage. It's a bash on stereotypical 'ignorant right-wingers' (rednecks) that supposedly discounts anybody who questions the pro-America message that sometimes comes out of the MMM as being a bunch of "pinko-commie fa88ots". I'll never say that Green Day is perfect. To me it's falling into a stereotype on the otherside and I'm not sure if Green Day doesn't mean to be a bit self-sarcastic. Cow of Shame
No one's mentioned TISM yet: "Everyone Else Has Had More Sex Than Me" Everyone else has had more sex than me. Does anyone else get that feeling? Teenagers naked, Couple in threes Grandparents swing from the ceiling. Corporate chambers and office amore. Shenanigans outdoor and in. Resist and then later your find out there's more Regret in not doing the sin. Our lives have to die Of that there's no help My favourite way to end them Is the orb-weaver spider's whose pedipalp Enters the female pudendum. Then dies on the spot His corpse there still stuck, Left for his rivals to curse at. He would rather die than not get to f^(k Personally I reckon it's worth it. Everyone else has had more sex than me. Does anyone else get that feeling? ... Does everyone think...

what exactly does the 'pinko' in 'pinko-commie' mean? Is this an attempt at insult by insinuating homosexuality? If so, then isn't the 'f@ggots' at the end redundant? Edited October 12, 2005 by Cow of Shame
Jaime
Since we're apparently off Green Day, what are people's interpretation of these lyrics?? Her name was lola, she was a showgirl With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there She would merengue and do the cha-cha And while she tried to be a star Tony always tended bar Across the crowded floor, they worked from 8 til 4 They were young and they had each other Who could ask for more? Chorus: At the copa (co!) copacabana (copacabana) The hottest spot north of havana (here) At the copa (co!) copacabana Music and passion were always in fashion At the copa.... they fell in love His name was rico He wore a diamond He was escorted to his chair, he saw lola dancing there And when she finished,he called her over But rico went a bit to far Tony sailed across the bar And then the punches flew and chairs were smashed in two There was blood and a single gun shot But just who shot who? Repeat chorus At the copa... she lost her love Her name is lola, she was a showgirl, But that was 30 years ago, when they used to have a show Now it’s a disco, but not for lola, Still in dress she used to wear, Faded feathers in her hair She sits there so refined, and drinks herself half-blind She lost her youth and she lost her tony Now she’s lost her mind Repeat chorus At the copa... don’t fall in love Don’t fall in love

Obviously! I have to mention, for people who haven't actually heard American Idiot that you miss loads of meaning if you just read the lyrics. The happy, poppy music is so wonderfully sarcastic.
