crusader1234
I can't read an anti-Christian message in those lyrics, myself. Anti upper middle class suburban, sure.
Yeah. Word. And Socrates, you really can't just go around claiming everything you disagree with or don't understand is some sort of disgusting left wing coup. Maria
It's not a Christian message that is presented in this song, but a message that happens to agree with Christianity -- anger at the evil of a meaningless life, the despair, and the society that is inhuman enough to accept it. And when I say inhuman, I mean... impersonal, I guess -- the idea that people aren't people's problems, it's the government's problem, etc., when what people really need isn't money but people who care and who help them live. Carrie
I love Green Day and I bought the album. The entire album is highly political, so if that kind of stuff offends you, don't buy it.
zabbazooey
I love Green Day. And they ROCK in concert. Their older stuff is better to me. back before they got famous.

Then again I like all that highly political stuff. The music I listen to has quite a range from religious (Seven Sorrows) to political (Greenday etc) to lots of swearing and pretty strangeness (The Darkness etc). I think it really depends on you personally and what you can handle. Although I do have to say I just got a pretty sweet Switchfoot deal. Their first three albums for $15. I recomend getting some of Switchfoot's old stuff cause I have their new cd also and their old stuff is soooooo much better (that's usually the way it works though). I listen to Christian rock, secular pop, rock, metal, alternative, some hip-hop, techno, and on and on. Some would probably be scandalized by my music collection. Sojourner
I've never been a huge Green Day fan. I've liked a song of theirs here and there, but nothing I've heard has motivated me to buy one of their albums.

jasJis
I love Green Day. It helps if you put some thought into it. Then again, I'm a 60's child and lot's of music had controversial thought within it. Here's my take on the lyrics: I'm the son of rage and love, (singer has flawed identity. Christians/humanity are children of God, who is perfect Lovee.) The Jesus of suburbia, (singer is identifying humanity's error in identifying their 'savior' as to what suburban society can provide.) From the bible of "none of the above", (this illogical perception is born of trapping oneself by rejecting everyone else.) On a steady diet of soda pop and ritalin, (identifies societie's salvific grace as being shallow and impermanent. snack drink and drugs as compared to the Body and Blood) No one ever died for my sins in hell, (a hint of the aloness and indadequacy of society's salvation. You're on your own, nobody else cares about you or can care about you) As far as I can tell, (pointed indication of lack of Absolute Truth or something beyond our self perception) At least the ones I got away with (ignorance of the divine connection we have with each other and our divine connection with God as children of God) But there's nothing wrong with me, This is how I'm supposed to be, (futher development of the idea of conditional morality and seperation from the Divine or spiritual) In a land of make believe, That don't believe in me (singer's world is only what his perception and awareness is. again indicates ignorance of the spiritual and divine or something bigger then himself) Get my television fix, (alliteration to TV sending the messages of how tho think and act and be) Sitting on my crucifix, (his crucifix is his couch. he doesn't have to 'DO' anything but watch TV and decide what to think about himself and this is done on the couch, just for himself, not for any others.) The living room in my private womb, (again, while watching TV and sitting on the couch, what he thinks of himself, according to TV and the messages of society, is how he creates and makes himeslf. While the Mom's and Brad's are away, (instead of mom's and dads (a family) society has destroyed even that so it's mom and her boyfriend/new husband/?? who is not his 'father') To fall in love and fall in debt, (superficial of the suburban material life. you buy (go into debt) for 'things' that you are told to love and make you happy) To alcohol and cigarettes and Mary Jane, (numbing habits that will slowly kill you and keep you from thinking) To keep me insane and doing someone else's cocaine (the basic insanity of this whole life and train of thought and how society and others suffer from the same lies and share with each other cocaine as a lie to keep us from the truth and keep us from being alive) It's a condemnation of the suburban/material/self-centered life. You also have to consider the context of the entire album. Edited October 11, 2005 by jasJis
