Iacobus
It drops my conversations, it logs me into the network but just sits there thinking for over an hour, and when I can't seem to get anywhere and decide to complain, I hear, "oh, one of the servers is down...we're working on it." Since when did "one of the servers is down" become an excuse? Shouldn't there be backups? Should students who need the internet for school work, not to mention keeping up with family and friends, be left offline the weekend before midterms? When we address the IT office and they tell us that they plan to have a better network next year, why don't we ask, "why will it take so long?" I couldn't log on in my dorm today, so I took my computer to the hook-ups in the library and tried there...it still wouldn't go. The library boasts super fast internet connections...well yeah, when the IT department keeps up on their job and makes sure the server can handle the anticipated traffic! [/rant]
I fully understand. I just cursed my ITS here. We HAVE to use IE today to send mail. Or we can, as I found out, go type the mail, save it as a draft, and then mail it out from the draft folder. Silly, I know. But it is a problem with the Microsoft stuff. It is evil. The IT here is decent, but when it goes down, it is bad. If a server went down the whole campus would probly explode. I mean, explode as in a. To drive forth (air); to emit. And this is Iowa, what would stop all that air that is been driven forth from rotating and being scary?
photosynthesis
Things always work well for me at EMU, of course three of my very best friends (including my roommate) work for our IT department. : : :
oh... maybe that's why i don't have computer problems. i worked for Goucher I.T! scardella
Yeah, the IT's iron grip caused me headaches when I was there. My biggest gripe was that they had a campus wireless network, but didn't let students use their own laptops on it. They also shut down unused ethernet jacks too. My job's network has the opposite problem, it is not locked down enough. So, I get to run around w/ virus problems all the time. I've kinda seen it from both sides, and I'd rather be on the too open side than the iron grip side. High speed internet.... better than coffee... Old_Joe
Indeed he is. Just one more step towards Catholic global domination.
World Domination will be ours! Although technically, since Christ died once for all and is King Heaven and Earth wouldn't that mean the Church already dominates the world? A mindbendingly ingenious plan to control the world. I have an idea. You could open up a cybercafe near campus and have Gregorian chant and traditional hymns playing ALL the time. : Edited October 10, 2005 by Old_Joe
Fides_et_Ratio
Of course I came for the technology! You mean Scott Hahn isn't famous for network rerouting and fiberoptic cable manipulation?!
The whole reason I bought my wireless (which works great now!) was to not have to bother with the University's lack of internet technology. robguitar
LSU's system is pretty good. If you're a registered student, you can use the wireless anywhere on campus. What I hate is the comptuer testing lab. It's notorious for taking your test registration and dropping it without your knowledge.
rachael
quit whining we're the only dorm on campus with wireless connections (all of the other dorms have ethernet). more than half the people have never been able to connect to the internet from here. it's also amazingly slow. the IT people gave up caring after the first week. the school won't put more routers in the building because it's gonna be torn down after this school year. so, i don't think you have any reason to complain. Oh, and I doubt many people at your college have quite the same reasons I do for needing to be online. It's up now, but taking a long time...and the Phatmass logo on my firefox tabs has been replaced by the Franciscan logo
