hyperdulia again

 i will admit my desire to talk like a gutter-snipe is part of why i care about this in the first place, but i also want to not do what the church says i shouldn't do, i'm just not convinced she's said as a matter of faith or morals that i'm not allowed to cuss.

still don't get it...nope...sure don't...and this isn't feigned ignorance, it's real...don't get it nope, nope nope.

Hyper,

Basically, profanity would fall into the same category as rudeness, intolerance--a general lack of virtue. When one does something to deteriorate their virtue, one is sinning--albeit, most likely venial--depending on the severity.

Simply saying the cuss words is not a sin in itself, but the intention of inflicting a negative feeling that almost always goes along with cussing is the sin--as it offends people around you. A lack of virtue is what is harmful.

- When I cuss, I try to use lesser forms, such as "freakin".

Then there is also "freakin" (which is not a cuss word).

"Freaking" is a lesser term for the F word? Why, when it's obvious what is meant when it's used? It degrades the sexual act, which is God's gift.

Freaking is a cuss word unless it's followed by the word "out," as in "freaking out." "Freaking" anything else means the F word. I degrades the act God created for procreation.

Youse guys and gals can use any dirty words you want -- let your conscience be your guide -- just please don't use them on phatmass. Thanks.

Dust, does phatmass still have a philter? I thought it didn't, 'cause all these words keep getting printed, whereas before, on the old phorum, they were eliminated.

Don't get me wrong Likos, I don't encourage cussing. It's a problem that I have to overcome. I'm not going to make excuses to justify my inappropiate behavior.

I can go on and on without using the F word or "freakin" word. But it's really hard to stop saying beaver dam.

Note: No sarcasm here.

I believe all the cuss words are eliminated? Which ones are you referring to? "beaver dam" is not filtered because it can be used legitimitely in a discussion in a "non-profane' way.

I also think cussing (non-sexual and non-religious) is permissible in certain situations. Some of my friends I can relate to better is I toss in a swear. They aren't scandalized by it. Others would be, so I wouldn't say it. Sexual and religious swears are always bad news.

I wonder though, that society is changing the meanings of these words. Even the "F" word, no longer only applies to the sexual act and is used in a variety of different ways. I'm not saying it's ok to say, just wondering about changes in society and how it would affect speech in the future.

The thing we always have to keep in mind is that language is fluid. It changes. It evolves. Words do not always mean the same things. They take on new meanings, and we even make up new words.

What may be considered "bad" today, may not tomorrow. Or ten years from now.

Even the difference in cultures words can mean different things. Take for instance the word "bloody". It obviously has a different conotation in England.

I think it all comes down to intent. If you intend the word to be bad, or to be used negatively against someone, than that is wrong.

If using the word "freaking" is wrong, then so are using other substitutes, like "sugar" and "fudge" are wrong too. Because its about intent.

EcceNovaFacioOmni

I can't believe nobody brought this up:

But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.

Colossians 3:8

Anyways, the above shows that cussing isn't Biblical. I have seen profanity on this board including the "A" word and inappropriate use of the word hell.
