Katholikos
I know, I know, even young "ladies" have mouths like the bottom of a garbage can these days. Talking dirty is "kewl" for young men as well. What was once the most offensive swear word in the English language has gone public. And euphemisms for it are everywhere -- on television, radio, and any place English is spoken. But these words desecrate and demean the most sacred act that can take place among a man, a woman and God. Yet we treat it and talk about it as anything but sacred. These degrading exressions have found their way onto phatmass. Once upon a time, the phatmass philter would have scrubbed them out so that people like me wouldn't have a thing to complain about. So I'm asking, what happened to the phatmass philter? What happened to our morals that has made this kind of talk permissible, even on a Catholic discussion phorum? What happened to our sense of the sacred? JMJ Likos Edited December 2, 2003 by Katholikos

IcePrincessKRS
There are a few instances of people skirting around the fiddler to type out "carp" but I've missed it if there are others.

dUSt
Cussing is a sin related to taking the Lord's name in vain according to my Baltimore Catechism.
hyperdulia again
wouldn't that just be that horrible "gd" word?
morostheos
I must say I've always wondered how any cussing would be under taking the Lord's name in vain... Obviously it isn't good to take the name of anything holy or sacred in vain, because it is a disrespect to God, but what about other things? Is it wrong to take the mushy mud pie's name in vain? If it is, is it because God made it too, and so we shouldn't disrespect it? Sorry if this post is a little crude, but it's a train of thought I've never quite been able to finish.... Anna
might wanna change mushy mud pie to pope moros. Seriously, I think Likos may be referring to the very frequent use of the word "freaking" as a substitute for "f-----ing." While there is nothing actually impure about the word "freaking," using it as a substitute for an impure word is just like saying it. In short, you're using a specific neutral word in such a manner than a specific impure word would be used. So the otherwise neutral word no longer has a neutral connotation, but an impure one. It may not be taking the Lord's name in vain, but it is impure speech. I confess it as "impure speech." Scripture says that "the tongue cannot be tamed," and I agree, it's really hard to stop using words once we've let them slip off our tongues a few times...("Be slow to speak," James 1:19. 8-3-98, "Your tongue cannot be tamed," James 3:8) Pax Christi. <>< Edited December 2, 2003 by Anna
Kiddkapps
Is it wrong to take the mushy mud pie's name in vain? I know this is your train of thought but 2 quick questions...or comments depending on how you read em * mushy mud pie or pope? *um when would you ever be calling out JPII? Not that it's appropriate to be using the Lord's name or cussing...but um.....i just don't see someone saying it.
CatholicAndFanatical
Ive seen the "D" word on here, should of been filtered out. But whats sad is that a fiddler needs to be here at all. This is a Catholic Phorum, why anyone would cuss on here to begin with is beyond me. I spoke about it in the "Introducing.." thread..look on page 2 I think it is and you'll see the word didnt get filtered out. And my dad say's 'mushy mud pie' instead of 'Pope' and it drives me crazy..grrr I get so angry when they disrespect him. Yea, their those lovely pentecostals we've all come to love.

marielapin
I am very guilty of using the word freaking, without knowing its roots. I would say that this is very like the word smell of elderberries. Of course, I always thought freaking meant freak-like, but that's just my simple mind. I need to come up with another adj to use frequently.
