Mickey's_Girl
I don't know about the rest of you, but I take offense from this. Since when does someone's looks indicate who they are? In fact, my friend who brought me to the Catholic church looks like this now. Yes, he has long, thick dark hair, and has a rock-and-roll appearance. He would not go and topple church altars.
I was offended, too, by this silly comment about the person's looks. I know plenty of people who look "non-mainstream" who behave just fine. I try not to make assumptions about people, although I sometimes do it anyway. On the other hand, let's be honest: people's looks often *do* indicate "who they are". I don't mean we should make snap judgments; what I mean is, people often put together their appearance to send a message. I certainly do. I think I look *exactly* like the kind of person I am, and I fully intend people to see that. Whether you look like the O.C. or you have blue hair and multiple piercings, you're trying to say something. (Granted: people, especially those of different generations, don't always get the message you intend to send. On the other hand, if they're that out of touch, how are they supposed to know?) They could be members of some cult or atheists. They could be disgruntled Presbyterians for all we know. The article doesn't elaborated on the motives.
Glad you said something HSMom, certainly people with such appearances aren't likely to be straight-laced fundies (how's that for a stereotype?) Oh, and disgruntled Presbyterians, rofl..... just gets to me somehow.....

1337 k4th0l1x0r
Yikes this literally hits close to home. My wife went to that church and her parents still do. They've had that altar for a real long time, since the old St. Ann's church was built and that was back in the 19th century. My in-laws went to mass Saturday night so they probably didn't hear about this. I just called my wife and she is getting in touch with her parents and hopefully we can get more info on this. 1337 k4th0l1x0r
Here's another story on it: http://www.al.com/news/huntsvilletimes/ind...2490.xml&coll=1 Aparently, the FBI is already involved in the investigation and they are looking into it as a hate crime. The good news is that just a corner from the top of the altar broke and a few of the legs broke so it is likely that the altar will be repairable. From what it sounds like, the group of attackers were part of a small, if unorganized, Christian cult and one of the woman attackers was raised Catholic. The man leading the attack said that he didn't intend on breaking the altar and only wanted to tell the people to "change their ways" and "teach them to pray right." Given the speech they used it seems like it could be a hate crime. Also, the priest there is very upset over the whole issue and is wanting to do more to keep other attacks from happening. It's not uncommon for our churches to be attacked. At my last parish someone came in the church and defiled the statues of the Holy Family and threw the flowers into the baptismal font. There are still a lot of ignorant people down South and we should pray for them.

Duc_In_Altum
Its more common than most people think. The parish that i am a young adult leader at had some neighborhood kids break in just last year. They tried burning all the vestments in the middle of the sanctuary and tipped over pews. That's a little different though. This is a really sad story. I sure hope they can repair that altar and that the parishoners are stronger for it. . Lord have mercy. peace, -Joe (with my angry face on)
Paladin D
A parish I used to go to for about 3 years (back in Delaware), was set on fire about a year ago. Only the rectory attached to the building was burnt, and one of the two priests burnt his hands while trying to open a glass door to escape. They also found swatizkas (the symbol the Nazi army used) drawn on the outside of the church. Last I heard, the FBI was investigating the case since it was considered a hate crime. photosynthesis
This is absolutely horrifying!!! A parish I went to a year ago every so often (St. John's, Westminster, MD) was vandalized too. Someone went into the church when it was unlocked, stole the Tabernacle and the Eucharist that was inside, and threw it in the middle of the highway near the church. The pastor of the church, Fr. Valzano, went in the middle of the highway, risking his life to rescue the Tabernacle (which was not harmed and licked all of the broken Hosts off the pavement he is such a holy priest... 1337 k4th0l1x0r
The attackers speak out now: http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=3937833 They came on the news last night and were basically unrepentant over what they did. The only apology they gave was to a coffee shop owner whose coffee shop they frequent. They apologized over a loss of business he may have due to the fact the group was often seen there. Pray for these misguided souls.
