Fides_et_Ratio
So, I (honestly) accidently broke the (very) old acoustic/classical-looking guitar I was learning to play the guitar with (but not for or at Liturgical functions.. ) ... Anyhow, my friend's husband has this awesome looking guitar that's an acoustic guitar, but it has the "look" of an electric one (just rounded a bit in the back). Anyone know what sort of guitar that is? I want it.
ninjakyle
It could be A hollow body guitar, a semi-hollow body guitar But I doubt it is a gretch
Fides_et_Ratio
kind of... I would need a more 3-D image... the back of the guitar was totally rounded out, rather than box-ish-- it was slim and pretty awesome looking. It "looked" like an electric, minus the rounded back (but I've never seen a guitar that's rounded like that).
Fides_et_Ratio
maybe a better question to ask is what's a good beginner acoustic guitar?
ninjakyle
I would say for a beginner, anything. I began on a piece of cwap. And then as I got better, I upgraded. The nice thing about a cheap guitar is that if you don't stick with it, you don't loose out too much. If you get a nice guitar, you might be more likely to play it and it will be easier to play. So basically, you can't go wrong as a beginner. Just don't pay more than it is worth. I like to go to www.harmony-central.com (a good place for tabs) and read user reviews before I buy anything. They also say how much they paid. I try to pay less than anyone else did. That semi-hollow body (which they do have rounded backs sometimes) would be fine for learning on, but you will probably want an amp to play it through because it won't be very loud without an amp. ryanmeyersmusic
it's probably an ovation... is the rounded back made of plastic? Like so: or so:

So, why not Ovations? Bad quality? I like how they're smaller cause it's easier for me than the big beast of a one i have now...but are there any good brands that have smaller styles like that? Any suggestions would be fabulous. :
ninjakyle
if you are going to a guitar store, i would suggest you ask someone to go along with you to help you pick one that is a guitar player. For beginners, pawn shops usually have cheaper used guitars.
ryanmeyersmusic
i'm not an ovation fan either... the whole plastic thing... plus, when I played one, that curved back made it slip and slide all over the place. it was like begging me to make it a dobro...
I'm a big ovation fan. The sound on them is just amazing. I actually found it easier to play then the Alvarez I have... Honestly, you need to sit down and test a few out just to see how comfortable you feel with it. My very first guitar was the bottom of the line electric guitar. Then, my guitar instructor gave me his old no-name brand accoustic so that I could play with him in church. It was pretty difficult to press the strings down on that one. A couple years later I bought the accoustic Alvarez I have now and it's much easier to hold the strings down. Well, that's my 2 cents worth! :
franciscanheart
i was about to ask if the rounded back was plastic. im not a fan of ovations either. as far as beginners.... if you really plan on playing why not invest the money from the very beginning and learn and play on the same one for a long time? i learned on my yamaha and i was fine. now i have a 12 string and a ventura. i know people who started on a rare takamine. i mean... why not? sweetpea.. are you looking for just acoustic or would you settle for electric?
