Maria
Abstaining from meat is abstinence, not fasting. Fasting is having less than (or equal to, perhaps) two meals worth -- 1 full meal and two snacks. We do the abstinence thing but we don't fast on Fridays. OLAM Dad
Some form of penance is required, being old fashioned, my family doesn't eat meat. I find cam43's link interesting. I wasn't aware that the USCCB was considering returning to no meat Fridays for all Catholics. I, too, find that not eating meat on Friday's is a good outward sign of my faith at work. lifescanticle
I would like to say that I always remember to abstain from meat or do some other form of penance but I can rarely remember to do so. Or I remember after a meal. Does anyone have a good suggestion to jog my memory?

I'm just going to go meatless all year from now on, because I struggle with the "substitution" -- and have yet to come up with a consistent one that I can remember. I think I remember things best when I'm a creature of yearlong habit.

Wear something special? Making yourself give up something worse/more difficult for the rest of the day -- as soon as you realize you forgot -- can be a good motivation to remember in the future. sweetpea316
This is something I'd like to start doing.... But, as a curious little not yet Catholic like myself...what is the significance of it? Just so that I'm not doing it 'just because', but know the reason behind it.
Still wondering... can someone explain?
Krostandt
Yes. On Fridays and Wednesday, I refrain from all animal products, except fish. As I mentioned in a nother thread, the fast is the easier part. Supplimenting your spiritual live is the difficult part.
