Hey all!
I was just wondering. I personally am going to try making it a practice of mine throughout the year. I think it's also a great way to witness to the Faith without words.

In Jesus and Mary,

I try to remember, but I'm not very good at it. But I usually substitute another penance since meat's not a big deal to me...

Does going to Friday mass with three small children count as a penance?

I try to remember to fast, but normally I dont. Something im working on along with the other thousand things on my 'Working on' list.

However, I do try and pray for people even more that day, or be extra nice and tolerant. :D

I am currently in negotiations with my wife for the Friday fast. In the mean time, guess I'll have to substitute with another form of penance but I have not found one that is properly suited so far.

The negotiations are tough because the nutrition department is under my wifes jurisdiction in my household, so it gets a little rocky.

On the other hand I won the 'prayer before supper' debate and forced my ten year old to watch 'the Mission' and he actually liked it very much.

And PS, for me, no meat is a penance... I love meat, all meat! If only I could eat only meat and skip the other food groups (except beer), I would be quite a content little Catholic.

In my house, if I didn't eat the meat for supper, I'd be in trouble with my Dad. So I do.
But I fast on Wed and Fri as is appropriate with the brown scapluar. I just sometimes have to eat meat at dinner.

i always fast from meat on fridays... and it definitely is a great way to witness... esp. cause i'm at school on fridays. One day i ordered a meatless chicken sandwich but they were out so i was like ok i'll have a grilled coagulated milk... this guy next to me was like "sooo you like being a vegitarian??" i told him i wasn't and after he got over his confusion i explained how and why i don't eat meat on fridays. it was pretty cool to be able to share that with him.

It's a big deal for my mom, and on top of that, she forgets often, so I have to come up with another penance that day anyway.

I've just decided to pray the Way of the Cross on Fridays instead.

I pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet with friends on Fridays at 3pm. That could work as a penance right?

*convert confused about the nature of penance*

This is something I'd like to start doing.... :)

But, as a curious little not yet Catholic like myself...what is the significance of it? Just so that I'm not doing it 'just because', but know the reason behind it. ^_^
