homeschoolmom
I had no idea that the northern schools were closed, but i guess it makes sense if the power's off.
Sojourner
In my day, we just brought candles to school with us when the power was off. None of this pish-posh cancelling of schools just because there's no electricity.

About a mile from our house the power was on. There was a burger king with cars out in to the street. Seems people can't figure out how to eat with no power.
When I was 11, my parents moved out to the boonies (still live there). One year, we had an ice storm that cut off power to the house for 8 days -- which meant no stove, no well (electric pump) no furnace and no lights. We stayed in the house the entire time, using the wood stove for heat and to cook on (we improvised on several recipes). We also melted ice off the side of the house to use to flush the toilets. I think we had some drinking water already stashed someplace. It was fun at first, but got old after a few days of no showering. And the worst part -- it happened over spring break, so we didn't lose any days from school.
philothea
Wow, the weather is nuts lately. The weather radio just beeped and reported a storm nearby with BASEBALL sized hail.
FutureSoror
Hurricanes in Minnesota? That's what Wisconsin was saying a week ago. (OK, so maybe it was technically a tornado....) 75 mph winds, trees down everywhere, no electricity, basically same story here. The weather certainly is crazy lately. AlterDominicus
This whole world atmosphere is ABSOLUTELY ABSURD! Now they say that the BIGGEST Hurricane, the worst one coming is starting to brew off the coast of Africa.
