Pope approves barring gay seminarians

Vatican, Sep. 19 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) has given his approval to a new Vatican policy document indicating that men with homosexual tendencies should not be ordained as Catholic priests.

The new document-- which was prepared by the Congregation for Catholic Education, in response to a request made by the late Pope John Paul II (bio - news) in 1994-- will be published soon. It will take the form of an "Instruction," signed by the prefect and secretary of the Congregation: Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski and Archbishop Michael Miller.

How will this be implemented, do you think? Will questions about a man's orientation become part of the screening process before someone goes to seminary? Or before ordination?

I would hope a man entering would voluntarily supply such information (not just because of the document; I would hope they've always done so.) But, it goes without saying that the screening process should examine the psycho-sexual health of the candidate.

This not only changes the seminaries, it also sends a message throughout the church that we will not sway from the truth we hold.

I suspect this will draw more controversy than anything else, but so much the better if this controversy brings to light our stand for what is right within a sea of religions that are each in turn bending to the flavor of the times.

Long live Benedict XVI! And God keep my papa John-Paul the Great!

This is usually something the diocese has an idea of well before a guy gets to seminary, I think.

You should have heard some of the questions guys are asked in their pre-sem psyche evals...

I'd say that's an apt description.

I took a test for the government's Transportation Agency, and you should have seen some of the questions. Really really paranoid stuff. I mean like "Do you ever feel angry at the President" paranoid.

I am glad to see this and hope to see it implemented.

I also hope that there will not be a generalized appraoch and that each seminarian will be handled in a charitiable way and on an individual basis.

And I hope the "psych" tests are not used as a barrier of discrimination (as a means to keep qualified seminarians out).

No...just for keeping unqualified seminarians out.
