As a guy, I completely agree that you should continue spending time as friends, getting to know her better. A solid friendship is key. Also, don't worry terribly much if her friends say that she doesn't like you. Sometimes girls lie to themselves about things like this. I think littleflower said it the best :

Also, some advice for the future: a decent indicator of when you should ask her out is when your fear of not being able to be any closer to her outweighs your fear of losing her as a friend.
