I don't really know how to explain it, but all i can say is that it's happened to me.
Fides_et_Ratio
Thanks for the references p0lar! Some things I would suggest don't refer "specifically" to the Charismatic Movement (though nor does it exclude it by any means), so I suppose it doesn't matter too much. This is definitely my take on the matter:
Extraordinary gifts are not to be sought after, nor are the fruits of apostolic labor to be presumptuously expected from their use; but judgment as to their genuinity and proper use belongs to those who are appointed leaders in the Church, to whose special competence it belongs, not indeed to extinguish the Spirit, but to test all things and hold fast to that which is good.(116) (Lumen Gentium 12)

Brother Adam
Phillippe there is a book called "Baptism in the Holy Spirit: A Scriptural Foundation" by Fr. Francis Martin that I have read. It's only 55 pages long. You might find that helpful in explaining what charasmatics believe about it.
AfroNova No Limit Soldier
Why is there a lot of hostility & paranoia towards the charismatic movement, particularly here in Phatmass? Please don't be mad. I am going to make an attempt at objectivity: It seems that a lot of Phatmassers think that different = weird. But it's just different, it's not weird or unorthodox or blasphemous. As was said earlier ( I think Paladin D said), there are abuses everywhere - with the traditionlists, middle-of-the-roaders, and charismatics. Charismatic doesn't mean progressive/liberal/whatever term you want to use, I hope you know what I mean. I consider myself a traditionalist. As I said earlier, when I watch the Pope celebrating Mass on EWTN - heck! - that's the kind of Mass I want & nothing less. I get so irritated when Mass is celebrated in a sloppy, unprepared manner. Mass is the highlight of my friggin' life, it's the culmination of my entire soul, heart, mind, and purpose! That being said, I would like to share some of my experiences with you all, just to let you know that there are orthodox worshippers out there that may be vastly different from you. I have been to Mass in Mexico with full-blown "Mariachi" (I think that's the right word) bands, people clapping their hands, tambourines, maracas (sp?), etc. celebrated by orthodox priests. I have been to Filipino Masses with tambourines, maracas, and clapping. Also orthodox. I have been to African-American Masses with big black women crying out "Amen!" to everything the priest said. Again, they were orthodox. I read that Mass in Africa celebrated by JPII consisted of a lector who was a woman from an African tribe who did not wear a shirt. In fact, there are tribes in Africa where it is IMMODEST to cover your breasts. So different doesn't mean weird, doesn't mean out of line, doesn't mean heterodox, doesn't mean WRONG. Sometimes it's just different. Please correct me if I am wrong.
photosynthesis
charismatic catholics don't annoy me as much as charismatic protestants do, but that's a given. I think the Charismatic renewal has a place in the Church, and I enjoy contemporary praise and worship music... a lot of it is a matter of taste. but give me a High Mass any day... DeeDee
You are quite right. And I might add there is a lot of misunderstanding and especially judgement on many topics. Very sad. You might ask why do I hang around? From time to time I put in a few words of encouragement to people who ask for help, and other times simply express an opinion.
