robguitar
When donating, you know if you're donating junk or used items in good condition. Here in Baton Rouge, my wife works at the catholic school our kids go to. Last week, the school had 94 new students enroll. None of these kids had uniforms or school supplies. Every year there is a uniform sale that you can sell the uniforms your children out grow. We donated all the uniforms we were going to sell and a lot of school supplies we had stocked up on. Anything that had a hole or a rip was not donated. The uniforms were used, but in good shape. My point is that if you donate items that are truly usable and not junk, then that is the best you can do.
homeschoolmom
I tell you the one thing that I'm about fed up with. People who think their way is the ONE BEST WAY and get all ticked off, offended, and angry when it seems to THEM, others are incompentent, or not doing their job, or not doing enough, or are stupid, evil, uncaring, etc.
Who of us said this? jasJis
Who of us said this?
I didn't say specifically someone here. It was meant as a generality. I would say 'Don't get offended', but you just proved my point. BTW. I'm not sending cash to Red Cross. $3,800 is already a ton of money. If you were broke and an indegent, it's more than enough to get your feet on the ground. When I can, I may send it Catholic Relief Services.
Kilroy the Ninja
Well I can say that our "stuff" is perfectly usable - we were still using much of it. Look I understand the having to sort through nasty junk that should have just gone to the curb and I can appreciate the time it takes to do that, and the lack of time in an emergency situation. It just smacks the wrong way when people complain about getting help (as in the article). The bigger problem may be that there is no "one best way" and that by simply working together in many different ways it'll get done. There's no need to be rude. Nobody said anything bad about anyone. As it is, St. Vincent de Paul isn't accepting donations anymore here in Houston (for at least the next month), and I'm waiting to hear if a displaced family can use the futon (and friend knows someone who has taken in another family), and if not it'll all go to Goodwill or Freecycle (where a bunch of people who have extra people need it anyway).
