How much Latin does the average Catholic know?

My dreams are often in Latin, if not in Greek, Hebrew of Syriac.

Just kidding. But I've certainly studied Latin.

I think it would be cool if it was a standard part of the junior high school curriculum; this is when I first started with it.

I can juggle. (and not just juggling balls... rings, clubs, bean bag chairs, basketballs... "flaming torches") :disguise:
:detective:  what's wrong with juggling?

Nothing!! It just seems to me that being able to have a conversation in Latin is about as useful a skill as juggling-- great for parties.

Please don't read that to mean that I think knowing Latin is not useful. I believe it is very useful....

But being able to say things like, "My cat is sleeping lazily under the blue blanket" is like a party trick.

Could someone translate this for me:

Una Salus Victus

Supposedly it means "one hope of the doomed," but a priest friend of mine wasn't convinced that was a good translation.

I know lots of songs in Latin (yay for 9 years of choir!)...but that's about it. And then just some other random common phrases and words. But then again, I'm not Catholic yet...so do I even count? :idontknow: ^_^

The one salvation...and "victus" doesn't make any sense in there. It doesn't modify salus, because salus is secretly a feminine third declension. This is why I hate those quote books...they never get it right.

To get the English you posted, I'd go with "una salus victorum"...or better yet "una salus damnatorum"

Into Latin? If you did, you'd find that it doesn't say what the old missal says, which is a shame.

Amen!

At least that's what I heard from Jenny Donelson. Here's the kicker for me anyway: the first one is on the Feastday of St. Joseph of Cupertino. For reference see my avatar.
