How much Latin does the average Catholic know?

I know we had to learn it at school I'm a bit rusty now but I can say Mass in latin, I din't get to use it very often, It's a little different from classical latin It's like my use of Italian getting rusty. :P: These days I don't think it's taught in school so not many people would know it. I think they concentrate on languages that are used in the world. I think no doctor would use latin today as they did in the past but i could be wrong.

My parishoners try to teach me Spanish, Maltese, Tamil Samoan, Tongan, and last but not least Tagalog :idontknow:

Do you have a lot of Spanish speakers in Australia? Interesting...
I once had a conversation with an Australian HSmom who told me that Spanish wasn't taught much down there... but she lived in Perth.

As for Latin.... I want my children to learn the parts of the mass in Latin so that they can participate (or at least follow) should they ever go to a Latin mass. It's also handy for learning Spanish, French etc... oh and those tough English words.

I think Latin is unlike other languages in that you either know it or you don't. So with that in mind, I would say an extreme minority of Catholics know Latin.

I took it for a year and a half. One year in 5th grade (at a Catholic school) and half a year in high school (public school). Needless to say, I'm very rusty, but I think if I have any electives left sometime, I'll take a refresher course. Latin is fun. :)
