They even have the habit I like! I e-mailed the Vocation Directress abotu student loans, what's their policy, etc. They have a really long formation period. First affiliate, then postulant, then novice, then jr. professed, THEN perpetual vows. But I guess they want to make sure you know what you are getting into! Thanks sooo much TotusTuus!!! I'm still going to visit the Carmelites in St. Louis inOctober, and maybe next spring/summer I can go to visit these Carmelites in Los Angeles!! I am so excited! materdei
I know it means barefoot. Are you telling me that these sisters don't wear shoes? That doesn't sound right. Can you explain a little bit? The reason I thought they couldn't be discalced is because with their work, it wouldn't make sense for them to go barefoot.
"Barefoot" or discalced was used during the time of Teresa of Avila in Spain to say a community had been reformed. Not necessarily that a community was literally barefoot. When a community is Discalced it means they follow the reform, or another way of putting it is that their roots are in the reform. Teresa and John are in a sense seen as mother and father to discalced, whereas in O Carm. they are seen only as saints.
Totus Tuus
Thank you! That makes more sense. Sorry for the confusion.
MC IMaGiNaZUN
anybody ever made it as far as Alhambra CA. The Discalced Carmelite Sisters have a wonderful convent there. A lot of girls from my church would hang out there, and volunteer their for retreats. I also have a friend that feels called to the cloister, and plans on joining the georgetown monestary outside Sacramento. I myself had seriously discerned OCD friars. I am glad i did a weekend with them, and made contact, i learned a lot, and recieved confirmation on my vocation in general. I didn't feel called there. But i would recommend looking into them. They have a wonderful charism and spirituality. And of course St. Theresa of Avila is one of my most inspiring Saints. SHALOM

Totus Tuus
Well the one I love is in Alexandria, SD, and they don't have a website. Here's a link to some Carmelite websites: http://www.ocd.pcn.net/ocd/n2_usa.htm The one in New Caney, which you can find on that page, is very good. jgirl
I haven't, but Elizabeth whose blog is at http://thebeautifulroses.blogspot.com has corresponded with them. I do know that they have a novena for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel every year that attracts some of the best priests in the Archdiocese.
