[quote name='JP2Iloveyou' date='Oct 16 2005, 04:09 PM']I haven't posted on here in quite some time, but I thought I would reply.  I am a student at the University of St. Thomas and it is FANTASTIC.  The Cath. Studies department is outstanding, so is the philosophy department.  The theo department needs some work, but if you know which professors to take, for instance Dr. Boyle, it is fine.

Many of these places develop a reputation that is hard to break out of, in either direction.  For example, St. Thomas used to have a reputation as being very liberal.  In the past few years, it has really turned things around and I now would recommend it to anyone.  Unfortunately, in some circles, people don't know that and still label it as some leftist university that you should stay away from.  Nothing could be further form the truth.  The best thing you can do is go there and visit, talk to the students, and talk to the professors.

One of my best friends decided on St. Thomas because he found it far more Catholic than the others he was looking at, one being St. John's. It's another one of my friends' dream to go to St. Thomas because she has relatives who go there currently and she wants to go to a place with a strong Catholic stand.

[quote name='zunshynn' date='Oct 6 2005, 07:53 PM']St. Gregory's University in Oklahoma seems pretty good to me... They actually have pictures of priests and habited nuns. And they offer theology, not just philosophy.

I looked into St. Gregory's it seems like a very good school from what I've read and heard.

St. Ben's is highley accredited, but I heard it is very liberal.
That is just me though. They are welcoming, but 2/3 are Catholic. Depending on what your want your faith life to be. :idontknow:

My experience of St. John's and St. Ben's has largely been through their graduates, both B.A. and M.A., and I've found them to be deeply faithful people with good intellectual formation, who have deep attachment to their schools. St. John's has the Liturgical Press, a major publisher of theological books.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel told a friend of mine that going to a good secular college/university with a good Newman Center is better than a bad Catholic college/university.

I'm having a hard time finding a good Catholic Univeristy/college that isn't too too far away that offers an undergraduate in psychology. I know the Catholic Univeristy of America does but..I have my doubts. I know Steubie does too, but I don't want to go there. :(

Fr G is giving good advice.

I rue the day I sent my dtr to a Catholic High School---better to be in a public school and KNOW you are not being taught the faith, rather than being taught the faith warped...

I've always found them welcoming until you disagree...then you are an enemy to be vanquished...I know I'm harsh on St. John's/St. Ben's, but as I said before, I have siblings who have gone there, and it didn't turn out so well faith-wise. And the nuns are extremely liberal...a good indicator of this is that there are very few (as in, I'm not sure there are any) young nuns there.

As for the Liturgical Press...I think that Pope Benedict, before he was Pope made them stop printing certain books, because they were against Catholic teaching. That was the one comment our Bishop made on Pope Benedict XVI election...that he wouldn't allow some books to be published...in general, the whole diocese needs a lot of work...

May I say, I agree completely! I attended a highschool with warped faith teaching...that's getting worse. And the thing that bothers me most, is that they claim it is Catholic. If they didn't claim to be, I couldn't care less, but the fact that they tell us this is Catholic, and that we spend money on this...and then it's a load of bull...
