Thumper
Are you kidding?
No kidding! University of St. Thomas is very pretty, but beyond its aesthetic value, it is also a good school. My alma mater, as well as Cam's and hot stuff's. In addition to Theology and Catholic Studies, it also has a great education program. Awesome post Pio Nono! However, she would be more able, as she is far less removed from the scene there than I. I've been gone since 1998, she has been gone since last week (or so.) daugher-of-Mary
what's the deal with CUA? I heard they tended towards liberalism, but NCRegister gave them high rates for orthodoxy? Any insider reports?

St. Ben's and St. John's are both highly respected institutions . . . . though sworn enemies of University of St. Thomas: Given that rivalry, I also have to put in a plug for the liturgical music program at St. Thomas--I believe it offers a scholarship specifically for students interested in liturgical organ. Regarding CUA, I heard that presently it is quite conservative. I think the wiser way to go when you are trying to determine which school to go to, especially for graduate programs, is to take a look at who is on faculty and check out what they have published. You'll likely learn more from that than from a random appraisal of "liberal" vs. "conservative."

BEN'S!!! They are very, very dangerous. I have 2 brothers and a sister-in-law who attended St. John's/St. Ben's. My oldest brother, a theology/philosophy major is now only Catholic in name. My second brother forbid me to go to St. Ben's because of what is taught there. He says it is worse at St. Ben's than St. Johns...as in on Roe v. Wade day, they have stuff written on the sidewalks in chalk in SUPPORT of abortion. They do not believe in being the Church's missionaries to the world, but the world's missionaries to the Church. The nuns there in general are for women priests, and "equal rights" they are against Pope Benedict, and they are all around unorthodox. Please, please, please, DO NOT GO THERE. JP2Iloveyou
I haven't posted on here in quite some time, but I thought I would reply. I am a student at the University of St. Thomas and it is FANTASTIC. The Cath. Studies department is outstanding, so is the philosophy department. The theo department needs some work, but if you know which professors to take, for instance Dr. Boyle, it is fine. Many of these places develop a reputation that is hard to break out of, in either direction. For example, St. Thomas used to have a reputation as being very liberal. In the past few years, it has really turned things around and I now would recommend it to anyone. Unfortunately, in some circles, people don't know that and still label it as some leftist university that you should stay away from. Nothing could be further form the truth. The best thing you can do is go there and visit, talk to the students, and talk to the professors.

But I do agree about reading what the proffessors have published espcially in Grad school. As far as an undergraduate degree I would put more emphasis on campus life.
