FlyLikeABird
I need to ask people who are not in my program at school questions and then discuss what I find out in class! Would you guys be willing to be my "other people"? Opinions, comments, scientific answers, what ever comes to mind is fine! Ok so here's the first one..... What is the difference between chronic illness and disability?

FlyLikeABird
LOL, but seriously folks! We're talking what the difference medically, socially, emotionally, spiritually..... come on! Andrea348
a disability is something one experiences all the time.....a chronic illness can go in spurts, they can be fine for a little bit, then sick for a little bit
Era Might
Ok. I'd say, spiritually, there is no difference. All trials, whether they are permanent or recurring, exact strength and faith. Emotionally, though, it may vary, depending on the nature of the malady. Muscular dystrophy is harder to live with than occasional asthma, for example. Socially, a permanent disability is more noticeable, and it can affect shallow people. For example, someone may befriend a person who is occasionally in crutches, but perhaps not someone who is permanently in a wheelchair. Medically and economically is probably the most significant difference. A permanent disability requires permanent care, whereas a chronic illness comes and goes, and can probably be treated with less hoopla.

stuckinamo
i asked my friend who knows like everything & anything medical. this was his response: "well a disability is usualyl like an injury where you're hurt and it dis-ables you to perform like you used to often for the rest of your life. a chronic illness would be an illness that is not something you just get over but something that lasts a long time and affects you ability to perform something like the common cold would be an "acute" illness and something like kidney failure would be chronic it can refer to symptoms like AMI Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack. you could have somebody with a chronic cough that's lasted for weeks or you could have someone come into the ER complaing of an acute cough that just started last night." journeyman
I think the serious responders pretty much covered it . . . a disability seems more permanent, and irrevocable . . chronic illness can last so long that it seems permanent, but there is always hope for a cure

Soccer 15 SWC
As the other people said. A disablitiy is more constant while a chronic illness is spurts.
