Guest Guest
i've barely been in college for a week and already alcohol is everywhere! it's at my job, its in the dorms...there's no escaping it. My friends and I don't drink and its hard for us to find anyone else who shares these values. Recently my best friend broke up with her boyfriend over the issue. He was a very nice guy, they got along like they had known eachother forever, but he said he didn't want to lie to her....that he might drink occasionally with his friends, not a lot, but not never either. She's having 2nd thoughts, wondering if that was something worth breaking up over. So to sum it all up, where as Christians should we stand on the issue of drinking? What's ok and what is not? When looking for a relationship, how large of a role should this issue be? We're going crazy...!!! Thank you!
Pio Nono
JMJ 9/1 - Twenty-second Thursday I'll start with a poem attributed to Hilaire Belloc...
Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine, There's laughter, love and good red wine. At least I've always found it so - Benedicamus Domino!
There's no problem with drinking alcohol in the Catholic Church. However, drinking must be in moderation (no drunkenness). Also, much to the chagrin of many, it must be done according to the law as well (including age limits). If these two conditions are met, then there's nothing wrong with drinking. I don't know how many southwestern Europeans could live if they couldn't drink alcohol. Also, St. Thomas Aquinas says that the scrupulous should drink wine so as to help them lose their scruples. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
