They don't bury the dead in New Orleans. The highest point in the city is only 6 ft. above sea level, which makes for watery graves. Fearful that rotting corpses caused epidemics, the city limited ground burials in 1830. Mausoleums built on soggy cemetery grounds became the final resting place for generations. Beyond providing a macabre tourist attraction, these "cities of the dead" serve as a reminder of the Big Easy's vulnerability to flooding. The reason water rushes into graves is because New Orleans sits atop a delta made of unconsolidated material that has washed down the Mississippi River.

With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.

"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.
Person Dies At Superdome, Possibly From Suicide
There are more than 10,000 people in the arena.
Officials had earlier reported two deaths at the Superdome, and now, they report that someone died Tuesday after plunging from an upper level of the stadium. They say the person probably jumped.
I heard about that from a friend today. Quite sad. :sadder: Imagine all the families and other people that had no way to evacuate New Orleans. I imagine it must be quite stressful in the Superdome. No A/C, leaking roof, and messy bathrooms. Hopefully they'll be able to relocate everyone to safer shelters.

A man just called into Glenn Beck (of the Glenn Beck Show, duh) –
this man says he got a call at 12:30am from his daughter in New Orleans… the “dad, I just wanted to tell you I love you” call
She is a police officer – and was describing pure insanity, and she REALLY doesn’t believe she will get out alive.
The area she and her fellow officers are in has jewelry stores that are being looted, and the thugs have snipers on the rooftops that are shooting anyone in the area wearing a uniform. They wanna keep law enforcement away as they loot – how nice.

The police are just trying to save lives – they can’t stop looters anyway, so this is just dumb madness. Even if they did arrest, where will they put these criminals? All the jails are under water!
'You loot, I shoot'
Wild scenes of looting erupted around the Crescent city as people broke into stores to grab supplies, but also television sets, jewelry, clothes and computers.

In some areas, gun-toting citizens took to the streets to try to restore order. Where it was still dry, store owners were seen sitting in front of their businesses, guns in hand.

One had put up a sign: “You loot, I shoot,” it said.

Authorities were so intent on rescuing flood victims that at first they chose to let the looting go unstopped.

But Mayor Nagin said 3,500 National Guard troops were being sent to the city, and state police director H.L. Whitehorn was sending 40 state troopers and two armored personnel carriers.

“It’s a lot of chaos right now,” Whitehorn said of the looting.
My cousin's daughter lives in New Orleans not too far from the Mississippi River. She was supposed to be up here for the Chicago Triathalon this past weekend. I'm trying to find out if she actually made it.

This is all just so scary. And I totally don't get the looting thing. I understand looting for food and supplies, but jewelry and electronics and stuff like that? Stupid. They're going to try and hock it and people will know where it came from. Don't they think of these things? :idontknow:

WHY ARE PEOPLE LOOTING ELECTRONICS?

THAT'S ASININE!

They'd have to go a long way walking with a buttload of electronics to hock it.

This is scary.

Most jewels have very tiny registered serial numbers, anyway, carved in with lasers.

Well, she was listed in the triathalon results, so at least I know she was up here. Now I just need to see what her return plans are (she is a reporter for the Times-Picayune, so I don't know if they will try to get her back into the area or what).
