prose
Okay, yeah gas prices smell of elderberries, but it sure would be nice if we had some stable amount to go from. I mean it is like 4 bucks a gallon here in Canada, and about 2-3 bucks in the States... I would love to be able to pay only 3 bucks a gallon!! Not to mention even higher in Indonesia and such.... I just don't understand.

Dreamweaver
Anyone living in the Atlanta area? I heard that due to price gouging and such, gas has been almost $6.00! The govenor or someone had to institute a law to prevent unnecessary price gouging and greed. My car may be a bit old, it may be a bit rusty, but it gets decent gas mileage. franciscanheart
3.09 it was 2.68 last night.
3.09 here now too. at least. we were at tom thumb filling up because we get a discount there. when we pulled up to pump our gas it was 2.89 regular price. when we finished filling up they had bumped the price all the way to 3.09. in a matter of minutes (and right after the station got a refill itself) it jumped 30 cents. this is crazy. it has been jumping 10, 20 and 30 cents overnight all over the city. texas is in the top states with the most complaints about price gouging. argent_paladin
3.19 here. It's strange that we get outraged over the price of gas, as if we have some notion of the "real" price. But, like everything, prices fluctuate. Labor day is always the high point for the year and with Katrina and the global oil pinch, it is very understandable why prices are so high. But, historically speaking, the price of gas as a percentage of average income, or as a percentage of the minimum wage, is nowhere near record highs. This means that it takes less of our disposable income than many other times in recent history to fill our tanks. And to those who say "When will we learn?", the answer is, we will learn when it is cheaper for us to use alternate fuels, and that day is still far away. Much more likely is the discovery of more efficient ways to extract oil from oil shale, tar sands, etc. That could potentially produce millions of barrels a day and innovations are just around the corner. Also, Americans pay far, far less for gas than does virtually every other person in the world (except for Venezuala, Saudi Arabia, etc). Yet they have accepted the higher prices and flourish. Finally, the reason why Canada pays so much for gas even though it exports it is quite simple. If you were selling oil and Americans would buy it at $60 a barrel, would you sell it in Canada for $50? Of course not. So the reason why Canada pays more is because other people want it more. Really, we all pay more for gas because China wants it so much. It is simply supply and demand really. I personally think it should be taxed more, to pay for public transportation, cut pollution and fund energy research programs. Americans don't have a divine right to $2-per-gallon gas.
